Round 4 of the 2022 NRL Premiership will get underway on Thursday evening when the Gold Coast Titans host the winless Wests Tigers. Both clubs are coming off a loss which would have left their coach scratching their heads and their fans livid, but the beauty of Rugby League is that it all kicks off again less than a week later. The Titans come in as the $1.26 favourites despite giving up a 22-0 lead to the Canberra Raiders last Saturday, which paints a bleak picture for the Tigers as the $4 outsider.
Gold Coast have periods of games where they look like the finished article and can match it with any team in the competition. The problem is they also have disastrous periods where they look like a second-grade side and undo all the good stuff, which leaves them on the treadmill of mediocrity.
The loss to Canberra would be forgiven if it hadn’t happened before under Justin Holbrook, but just last season they gave up the same lead to a Brisbane team who went on to finish 14th. Their opening game against Parramatta also showed their tendency to fluctuate wildly, scoring tries at ease at one end while allowing their opposition to score more.
Justin Holbrook will be preaching consistency to his side as he tries to knock the bad habits out of them, but he will have to potentially shuffle his spine as Jayden Campbell races the clock to be fit for the game on a five-day turnaround. Jamayne Isaako will likely make his club debut in his place, which leaves the Titans in a pickle as they try to replace such a key cog.
The only consistent thing with the Gold Coast this season has been their left edge, with Beau Fermor, Brian Kelly and Phillip Sami combining for nine tries in three games. Sami is out this week, but Fermor and Kelly present great value in the tryscorer betting at BetOnline.

The Tigers remain the only winless team in the NRL for 2022, but this road game presents a great opportunity for them to get off the mark. Their next three games are Sharks, Eels and Rabbitohs, which means if they can’t get over the Titans they’ll face the reality of starting their season 0-7.
Their last loss against the Warriors would have infuriated their fans, not because there was no effort, but they played without intelligence and execution. They had a 13-on-12 advantage for the final 10 minutes of the game and instead of targeting the side of the field where the Warriors were missing a winger, the Tigers continued to go to the opposite side. That example is what punters will point to when they continue to low-ball them every year as a top-eight contender.
Every team gives their all every time they run out for the most part, but without any leadership on the field they’ll just remain a laughing-stock. To be $4 in the head-to-head market just five days after your opposition lost after leading by 22 points is almost unfathomable.
One positive from their Round 3 game was the performance of Englishman Oliver Gildart, who produced some fine examples of the silky touches he became known for at Wigan. He goes one better in this game and scores a try down the Titans’ right edge, which has been all-at-sea so far this season.
Titans vs Tigers predictions & best bets
The Titans should win this game, but they’ll have moments where you wonder if the 13 on the field have ever played the sport before. AJ Brimson will be the man to lead from the front, he will score a try himself set Phillip Sami up for a double.
