The mighty Penrith Panthers travel north to the sunshine state to take on the Gold Coast Titans at Cbus Super Stadium for Friday Night Football. Penrith are continuing their streak of dominance as they name an unchanged line up from their thumping of the Canberra Raiders. Meanwhile, the Titans have made multiple changes in their spine and outside backs to challenge the defending champions.
Early markets have been intriguing as the Gold Coast Titans have been backed from $9 into $6.50, before drifting back out to $7. This could be a result of AJ Brimson’s move to fullback, and David Fifita’s move back to the second row. However, the inclusion of Jayden Campbell in the extended bench does not spell certainty for the starting line-up. Penrith have been backed in from $1.12 to $1.10, since drifting from $1.07 which will not budge any time soon with the online bookmakers.
The Panthers have shown an equally incredible ability to score points as well as stop them from being scored. While the Panthers average scoring five converted tries a game, they only concede two. While the Titans can score points on their day, the greater issue is their defence, having conceded 56 points in the last two weeks alone. This makes the Panthers winning and covering the -18.5 point line at $1.90 a smart and valuable play.
Last week the Titans showed an alarming tendency to allow tries to be scored by back rowers. Both Heilum Luki and Jeremiah Nanai crossed to score tries, from chasing kicks and breaking defensive lines. One Penrith back rower that often goes unmentioned, but is more than capable of scoring tries, is Liam Martin. Whether it’s chasing kicks or running a hard line off Nathan Cleary, Liam Martin can score tries on his day. He represents incredible value at $3.10 to score at any time, while it’s also expected that Izack Tago will score at any time too paying $2 with bet365.
There is a gulf emerging between some of the top and bottom sides in the NRL already this season. Most recently, the Melbourne Storm walloped the New Zealand Warriors by 60 in a high scoring affair. This clash between the Titans and Panthers gives the impression a similar result could occur. In another high scoring affair, the total match points margin of +42.5 will be exceeded paying $1.90.
KEY MATCH UP: AJ BRIMSON V DYLAN EDWARDS
Dylan Edwards has been one of the most underrated fullbacks in the 2022. Not only can Edwards create players for outside backs, but he is dynamic in his kick returns. Edwards often runs for 200m+ with tackle breaks and line breaks too, making him a nightmare of opposition defences. AJ Brimson returns to fullback for the first time this season and will have his hands full to try and replicate the performance of Edwards. Brimson will also be contending with the elite kicking game of Nathan Cleary, and he needs to be at career best form to do this and give the Titans any hope of winning this game.
