The final home game for the Gold Coast Titans has huge ramifications at the wrong end of the ladder. They’ll take on the Newcastle Knights in Sunday afternoon footy in what is shaping up as an enormous clash for the Wooden Spoon race.
The Titans were down six and had a 13 on 12 advantage for the remainder of the game against the Dragons and were blown out. That tells you just how low the confidence levels are at a club that has just four wins this year.
That game also saw some weird coaching decisions like having Jarrod Wallace defend in the backline on a scrum only for Jayden Sullivan to embarrass him on the way to the try line.
Zero confidence, questionable coaching philosophies and it isn’t hard to see how the Titans have ended up as the NRL Wooden Spoon favourite.
They are somehow the $1.50 favourite (we will reveal why later) and despite all this a win would mean they take a huge step to avoiding the dreaded last place. Beau Fermor is a special to get on the try scorers list this week up against his former club. Injury meant he never got a debut in Newcastle, but he will be hounding the defensive line were the Knights are at their weakest, the right-edge.
David Fifita is the other one who will cross the line because of his strength. Newcastle hate defending their line and Fifita will only need one or two chances.
The 13 plus margin at $2.55 is the preferred option.

There is a little secret in the NRL that Newcastle hate going to Robina to play. They have been flogged in every game they’ve played there since 2016, conceding scores of 30 or more in their last six visits.
The Titans have rarely seen success in their 16 year history, so for the Knights to be so disgracefully bad in recent seasons at CBUS Super Stadium is beyond explanation.
While the Knights have performed better on the road in 2022 than at home, their fans are expecting another hiding after they showed some promise at home against Canberra last week in a close loss.
A playing group that has shown to be ill-disciplined will no doubt get distracted by the bright lights of the Gold Coast, and it might explain their poor record. The +6.5 line looks too small, so avoid at all costs and stick purely to finding some try scorers.
Edrick Lee and Dominic Young bagged eight between them in their 38-12 win at McDonald Jones Stadium earlier this year, so you’d be crazy not to back the gigantic pair to cross the stripe. Even get on them for multiple again, the Titans edges will give up some chances.
Key matchup: Sam McIntyre vs Jayden Brailey
Sam McIntyre has filled in admirably as a stop-gap hooking solution for the Titans, but Jayden Brailey has to be thinking that if he can get his middles to lay the platform he can have a field day around the ruck. The halves for the Knights have struggled creatively all season, so for them to have any chance at the upset they have to generate almost all of their good attacking play in the mid-field with energy and offloading.
Titans vs Knights betting predictions
The Titans will continue their hot streak at home against the Knights, based purely on history. Their form shows them at a low ebb, but it only takes turning up for one day against an opponent who has struggled at a ground previously to get back on the horse.
