The Big Bash continues in Sydney with the Thunder hosting the Heat from the Sydney Showground Stadium.
The Thunder will be looking to bounce back from their 6 wicket loss to the Strikers in Adelaide, while the Heat beat the Strikers to break and eight game losing streak, which sets up an intriguing clash between these two franchises.
The Heat have been buoyed by the return of Australian test quick Michael Neser who has provided much needed spark with the ball in hand, while international white ball specialist Sam Billings was the player of the match for the Heat in their last win.
The Thunder will be looking towards their English white ball specialist, Alex Hales, to continue his strong form from their last match while Gurinder Sandhu and Nathan McAndrew will continue to lead the charge with the ball.
When assessing recent form from these sides after the Heat beat the Strikers, who had previously beaten the Thunder, it would be easier to pick the Heat as winners. However, given the Thunder have been a far more successful side in the BBL over a long period of time, compared to the Heat, the Thunder are the safest bet to win this match paying $1.73.
In a stacked batting line up for the Thunder, Rilee Rossouw is arguably the most devastating batman in the home side’s top order. The former South African international uses his incredibly strong wrists in combination with beautiful, full swings if the bat to play strongly on both sides of the wicket. Rossouw is particularly strong scoring through the leg side and will be able to attack not only the Heat’s spinners, but their taller, faster seam bowlers. Rossouw is a great value play to be the Thunder’s top run scorer paying $4.
Daniel Sams is one of the more highly-skilled T20 cricketers in the Big Bash. Not only is he a brilliant hitter of the ball with bat in hand, but a highly skilled bowler. Sams is a master at mixing up his pace and length with cutters that make batting and scoring runs fluently almost impossible for his opponents.
Sams will be very well suited to the Showground Stadium wicket that is typically slower and more suited to Sam’s style of bowling. Sams is a great bet to take 3+ wickets for the Thunder paying $4.
Key matchup: Alex Hales vs Michael Neser
The clash at the top of the order between these two men will be crucial in deciding the outcome of the match. Hales has shown on many stages across the world that he is one of the most devastating batters in world cricket in the T20 format. Neser has returned to the Heat from his duties in the Australian test side and excelled immediately, taking top order wickets at regular intervals, and putting pressure on the oppositions middle to lower order. Should Neser dismiss Hales cheaply and expose the Thunder’s weaker middle order early, the home side could have a hard night ahead of them. However, if Hales gets going early with the bat, the Thunder will be incredibly difficult to beat.
