The Masters 2025 tournament preview
The wait is finally over — it’s Masters week once again. From Thursday, all eyes turn to Augusta National as the world’s best golfers vie for the sport’s most iconic prize: the Green Jacket.
Reigning champion and world No.1 Scottie Scheffler heads in as the clear favourite with top golf bookmakers, and with good reason. He’s claimed two of the last three Masters titles and continues to dominate from tee to green. But history says a repeat won’t come easy — no player has gone back-to-back at Augusta in over 20 years, and Scheffler’s putting remains the one question mark in an otherwise bulletproof game.
There’s no shortage of storylines. Rory McIlroy is still chasing that elusive career Grand Slam, while former champions Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth return to a course that rewards experience. Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, and Justin Thomas also shape as genuine threats.
Adding more intrigue is the return of LIV Golf’s headline names. Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, and in-form Chilean Joaquin Niemann will be keen to make a statement on the biggest stage and prove they can still mix it with the PGA Tour elite.
Irishman Shane Lowry shapes as a serious dark horse. He’s been one of the most consistent players on Tour this year, has a T3 finish at Augusta on his resume, and ranks highly in tee-to-green metrics and scrambling — two critical ingredients for success at the Masters.
Don’t rule out a bolter either. Sahith Theegala’s breakout in 2023 and Sam Bennett’s amateur heroics the year before proved that the Masters can still throw up a surprise or two. Expect a couple of lesser-known names to be in the frame come Sunday.
One key stat to keep in mind: 10 of the last 12 Masters champions gained at least 1.7 strokes tee-to-green in the three months leading into Augusta. That bodes well for a select few in 2025 — including Morikawa, Scheffler, McIlroy, Niemann, Lowry, Tommy Fleetwood, and Laurie Canter.
Top Australian Masters betting
Min Woo Lee’s recent form positions him as a strong contender to be the top Australian at this year’s Masters. Fresh off his first PGA Tour victory at the Houston Open, where he edged out Scheffler, Lee’s confidence is soaring as he heads to Augusta.
Lee’s affinity for Augusta National is evident, having described it as his favourite course. His past experiences, coupled with lessons learned from previous challenges, have prepared him well for this major.
In terms of betting, Lee is listed at $34 to win the Masters. While outright victory odds are long, focusing on the ‘Top Australian player’ market offers a more targeted approach. Given his form and mindset, backing Min Woo Lee at $2.88 with BetOnline to outperform his fellow Australians at Augusta presents a compelling opportunity.
The Masters 2025 outright betting predictions
Augusta hasn’t always been kind to Bryson DeChambeau’s power-first style, but it looks like the big-hitting American has finally figured it out. He finished T6 here last year and has posted top-six results in four of his last six majors held in the US. He also hit the ground running at Doral last week, leading early in the Miami LIV event before fading late. With his short game now matching his ball-striking, the +2000 on offer looks overs for the two-time US Open champ.
Shane Lowry is another worth keeping safe. The Irishman’s game is in superb shape — he ranks sixth in Strokes Gained: Approach and fourth in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green this season, and he’s fresh off three top-11 finishes in world-class fields. A T3 result at Augusta in 2022 showed he handles the course, and with a major title already on the resume, he’s no stranger to the big stage. At +3500, he looks a genuine value play.
And if you’re chasing something at longer odds, don’t ignore Sepp Straka. The Austrian has quietly turned into one of the more reliable performers in majors, banking a T2 at The Open, T7 at the PGA, and a T16 at Augusta last year. He’s made the cut in all three starts here and currently sits top 10 in Strokes Gained: Approach for the season. A breakthrough win isn’t beyond him, and punters are being well rewarded with BetOnline if he pulls it off.
