Tennis: Tomas Machac reaches top 20 with Mexican Open win
Tomas Machac won his first ATP Tour title at the Mexican Open in Acapulco on Sunday, beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6(6), 6-2 in the final.
The win also pushes Machac into the top 20 of the men’s world tennis rankings for the first time, with the 24-year-old Czech moving to a career high of No.20 off the back of the ATP 500 title.
The No.8 seed was brilliant on serve across the course of the one-hour, 37-minute clash, winning 29 first-serve points in a row at one stage and dropping just two all match.
“I was serving really well,” Machac said in his victory speech.
“I think without the serve today, I don’t think it would’ve been two sets.”
Davidovich Fokina was not without his chances, with the Spaniard foregoing a set point in the opening stanza before falling off in the second.
He had been an underdog across tennis bookmakers heading into the Acapulco final, paying $2.20 to win his maiden ATP Tour title.

Machac credited the work he has put in over the past 12 months as well as his support network for his maiden trophy at this level.
“I was working very hard in the past year, so I am happy I can achieve something that shows me I am going the right way,” he said.
“It is something I never dreamed could happen — especially at an ATP 500 — so it feels amazing for me.
“I thank the people around me who are helping me when I am struggling.
“It is very important because in those moments when the stress is in the court you just feel the good people around you will try and help you in your career.
“It helps me a lot as when I achieve those moments I will call those people and without them I would not be here.”
Australian betting sites still do not see Machac as a contender for any of the year’s remaining Grand Slams, however.
Top bookie Marantelli Bet has him listed at $126 to win the French Open, $81 for Wimbledon, and $151 for the US Open.
