Two of the major contenders in the 2022 AFL season will clash in round seven at the SCG when the Sydney Swans host the Brisbane Lions this Sunday.
Both teams currently sit inside the top four after starting the season with 5-1 records, and you can argue they are both better sides than they were 12 months ago.
John Longmire’s Swans are elite at both ends of the field, ranking third in the league for points scored and fourth for fewest points against.
The Lions are almost identical to the Swans when it comes to their defensive statistics; however, they rank first in the AFL when it comes to scoring, averaging a very healthy 105 points per game.
This matchup is one that is sure to result in a cracking contest, as both teams are heavily tipped to succeed in the finals this year, while a few star players are also returning to the field.
Tom Papley was arguably the Swans’ best forward last year, which was further solidified on All-Australian night when he received his inaugural blazer.
The zippy small forward is set to make his first appearance of 2022 this weekend, and we expect he will waste no time hitting the scoreboard.

Key matchup: Callum Mills vs Lachie Neale
Two players who are deeply entrenched in the Brownlow Medal market will lock horns in the middle this Sunday as Callum Mills and Lachie Neale face off. Both players have been fantastic this season, with Neale appearing to be back to his best following an injury-interrupted 2021 campaign. Mills played one of the best individual games of the modern era against the Hawks in round six, tallying 37 disposals at 91% efficiency to go with 11 marks, five tackles and a goal. With these two stars in great form, it shapes to be a great battle in the midfield.
Sydney Swans vs Brisbane Lions match predictions
The inclusion of Tom Papley adds a whole new dimension to the Swans already potent forward mix, while it also allows Isaac Heeney to spend more damaging time in the midfield. As good as the Lions have been this season, we think the Swans have the capacity to shut them down offensively, even without Paddy McCartin intercepting in the backline.
Sydney by 1-39 points
Sydney Swans vs Brisbane Lions goalkicker betting tips
Will Hayward has played Brisbane four times throughout his 95-game career and managed to kick a pair of goals in each contest. The crafty forward has hit the scoreboard in every game so far this season, while he has kicked multiple goals on three occasions as well. We are backing Hayward to kick two or more again this weekend.
Will Hayward 2+ goals
Sydney Swans vs Brisbane Lions same-game multi
We think the Swans will get over the line against a strong Brisbane Lions outfit this Sunday at the SCG, where Will Hayward will kick a pair of goals and Lachie Neale will be at his best in the middle.
Sydney 1-39 / Hayward 2+ goals / Neale 30+ disposals
