AFL finals preview: Sydney v GWS
The Sydney Swans and GWS Giants will lock horns at the SCG this Saturday as the first week of the 2024 AFL Finals Series continues.
With home-ground advantage, the Swans enter this qualifying final as favourites at $1.62 with Unibet. The Giants are paying $2.30 with Bet365, while the line is set at 8.5 points.
As the minor premiers, Sydney are also premiership favourites at $3.75 with top online bookmakers. However, they have tailed off significantly in the second half of the season, winning just one game between rounds 16 and 21. The form has picked up somewhat since then, with wins over Collingwood, Essendon and Adelaide to wrap up the home-and-away season.
Despite lacking a dominant forward target, the Swans are the top attacking team in the AFL, with seven players scoring over 25 goals. They also hold the strongest record against the other top-eight sides at 6-3, including wins in both matches against the Giants.
A quartet of Swans return this week, as Isaac Heeney, Tom Papley, Tom McCartin and Justin McInerney have all been confirmed. Aaron Francis, Robbie Fox and Caiden Cleary are almost certain omissions, but the likes of Taylor Adams and Braeden Campbell are also at risk.
The Giants comes into the finals in excellent form, winning eight consecutive matches before resting key players in their round 24 loss to the Bulldogs. GWS have a 6-6 record against other top-eight sides this season, while their performances in close games have been a strength, as they’ve won six games by under two goals.
GWS also have a strong finals record against Sydney, winning all three post-season meetings between the sides. However, with the second-worst attacking record in the top eight, they will need to improve on their scoring output.
Dashing pair Brent Daniels and Lachie Ash are certainties to return for the Giants this week, while Isaac Cumming, Conor Stone and Jake Riccardi are also available. However, the major concern is around tagger Toby Bedford, who is facing a fitness on a calf problem.

Sydney Swans v GWS Giants predictions
After winning five of the last six matches between the sides, the Swans should be confident of breaking their finals hoodoo against the Giants. They will have a full-strength side and have been far too good for the Giants on both occasions this season. At the SCG, back Sydney to win by less than 40 points at $2.15 with leading AFL bookies.
Sydney wingman Errol Gulden loves playing against the Giants. He has won the Brett Kirk Medal for best on ground in each of the last three meetings between these sides, averaging 34 disposals per game. He had 41 touches back in round 15, so back Gulden for another big performance with 30 or more disposals at $2.50 with top sports betting sites.
Expect GWS captain Toby Greene to make a major impact on this clash. The small forward has kicked multiple goals in eight of his last nine matches and averages two goals per game in 2024. With three goals in each of his past two finals against the Swans, back Greene to continue that trend at $2.80 with Unibet.
