Sydney v Carlton match preview
The top-of-the-ladder Sydney Swans are looking to continue their excellent start to the season as they host the dangerous Carlton Blues on Friday night in round 10 of the 2024 AFL Premiership season.
John Longmire’s men come in as comfortable favourites for this clash at $1.50 with Bet365, while the Blues are the underdogs at $2.80. The handicap is set at 12.5 points.
Last Friday, the Swans secured their fifth win in a row as they beat the inaccurate Fremantle Dockers by 48 points. In an excellent defensive performance, the Swans won every quarter and kept Freo to four goals in total. Isaac Heeney and Ollie Florent collected 28 disposals each, while Will Hayward was dangerous up forward with four goals.
With one loss for the season, the Swans sit a game clear at the top of the AFL ladder and boast a huge percentage gap of 27.6 over second-placed Geelong. As such, it is no surprise that online bookmakers have installed them as outright premiership favourites at $4.50.

The Swans got through the Freo win unscathed, but key defender Tom McCartin has been given an extra week off due to concussion, leaving the Swans slightly undermanned against the Blues’ key forwards. Meanwhile, former captain Luke Parker is in the frame for selection after starring for the past three weeks in the VFL.
The Carlton Blues also secured a vital win last Thursday, beating Melbourne by just one point at the MCG. After kicking the first six goals of the match, Michael Voss’ side led by as much as 38 points in the third term, before the Demons kicked six of the last seven to just fall short. Carlton midfield pair Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh starred with 69 disposals and two goals between them.
Although they are sitting in seventh on the ladder, the Blues are just one game behind second place. With wins over fellow top-eight sides Melbourne and GWS, they are expected to feature prominently in the finals.
The Blues have lost Adam Cerra (hamstring) and Matthew Cottrell (foot) after they both suffered injuries against the Demons, while Zac Williams (glute) and Marc Pittonet (finger) are both a test to play on Friday. Teenaged midfielder Jaxon Binns collected 43 disposals in the VFL, so he is a chance for selection.
Sydney v Carlton betting strategy
The Swans have looked by far the best side in the AFL this season, as highlighted by their massive percentage of 151.9. Sydney have lost just one of their past nine matches against the Blues at the SCG, and with a much healthier list, they home team should be too strong. It should be close between two quality sides, however, so back the Swans to win by 39 points or less at $2.05 with AFL betting sites.
With four goals in each of his past two matches, Will Hayward has become the most dangerous player in the Sydney forward line. He has multiple goals in seven of his nine matches this season and averages more goals against the Blues than any other club. With the taller forwards taking most of the attention, back the 25-year-old to continue his excellent form with two or more goals at $2.05 with top online bookmakers.
Averaging 23 disposals per game, wingman Blake Acres has been a major part of Carlton’s success this season. After a down performance against the Demons, expect Acres to bounce back with a big display. He gathered 26 disposals in a match-winning effort in last year’s elimination final between these sides, so back the former Docker to collect 25 or more disposals at $2.55 with Bet365.
