The KFC BBL is starting heat to up with Friday night’s clash between the Perth Scorchers and Sydney Thunder to be one of the biggest of the season. This clash could have major finals ramifications, depending on who is the winner of the match.
The Perth Scorchers have elevated themselves to the top of the BBL 12 ladder after comfortably beating the Heat in Brisbane and have put themselves in a position to secure a finals spot very quickly. However, David Warner will be standing in the way of the Scorchers as the Thunder look to be cracking at the right end of the season.
These two incredible teams last met on January 4, when the Sydney Thunder came away with a surprising and dominant win over the Scorchers. The Thunder were led by Oliver Davies and Alex Ross in a side that can only improve with Warner at the top of the order. Although a talented side, the Scorchers will not be able to beat the Thunder who are a great value bet at home paying $2.20 with Aussie bookmakers.
Warner is one of the biggest inclusions to any BBL franchise this season, especially off his double century at the MCG that single-handedly won him the player of the series award against South Africa. Warner has spoken on Fox Cricket in his recent commentary stint about the freedom of coming back to play short form cricket such as the BBL. At the top of the order, Warner will be free, fearless, and dangerous against the Scorchers attack and could be the Thunder’s highest run-scorer paying $3.60 with the top betting sites.
With the incredible batting line up the Thunder have, there will be an element of freedom afforded to the bowlers who will have a job on their hands bowling out this Scorchers side. Daniel Sams is still one of the most effective white ball bowlers in Australia, and the slower Sydney Showgrounds pitch suits his bowling style perfectly. No matter what innings, Sams will need to be the leader of the Thunder attack in key stages of the match, giving him every chance to take 3+ wickets for the home side paying $4.50.
KEY MATCH UP: David Warner v Jason Behrendorff
The battle at the top of the Thunder’s batting order will be the biggest of the night when Warner returns to open for the home side. He will be tasked with facing Jason Behrendorff who was the star of the Scorchers win when he took three wickets for 21 runs from his four overs. The way Behrendorff moves the ball in the air and off the pitch, particularly for a left-handed batter like Warner, will be tough to handle. Warner has shown over the summer a tendency to throw his hands at wide balls, which will be his major weakness on Friday. If Behrendorff can get the Scorchers off to a hot start, they could return the favour and beat the Thunder at home.
