All eyes turn to the SCG for the ‘Battle of the Bridge’ as cross-city rivals Sydney take on GWS in what should be the biggest AFL game this Saturday. The Swans come back to Sydney having had their wings clipped in a 93-point demolition at the hands of Geelong, while the Giants were brought back down to size by Brisbane.
New year but similar result for the Sydney Swans as they were trounced by their grand final opponents from 2022. There wasn’t much they could really do; Geelong play their stadium better than other teams play theirs, and the Swans were woefully undermanned.
It’s not surprising that the Cats’ key forwards were allowed to run amok inside 50 when the Swans were missing both McCartin boys, Dane Rampe, and Robbie Fox was dealing with late concussion issues. At one stage, the 86kg Callum Mills was directly opposed to the 104kg Tom Hawkins – and no, David did not beat Goliath.
Unfortunately, these same outs for the Swans will be touch-and-go to come back for their game against the GWS Giants. It’s not so rosy at the other end either, as the ageing Lance Franklin is no certainty to return to a forward line which only managed to score 37 points last week.
There is blood in the water, but are the Giants talented enough to take advantage and secure a win against their rivals? The answer will come down to whether or not the Giants’ gun players stand up. They have been gallant in their losses all year to date, not once being blown out of the water, but have let four potential wins slip by.
Even if the betting world has odds against them, surely the Giants can see that this is an opportunity to get some reward for effort. They will have to do it without their star backman Sam Taylor, who is out with a hamstring injury, but with the Swans boasting a small forward line, it’s not a massive loss. Get on the juicy odds of $4.30 at Marantelli Bet, because the Giants should win this.

Given the size of the potential lineup for the Swans defence, and how the Geelong key forwards did away with them last week, this game could be a big one for the Giants’ key forwards. But which one?
Jesse Hogan will be playing closest to goal, has a considerable size to him, and is due for a high-scoring day. Aaron Cadman, last year’s No.1 pick, is himself due for a big game, but plays a more mobile role in the vein of a Jeremy Cameron – and we all saw how that turned out for the Swans.
Cadman hasn’t had too many opportunities yet to show his wares at AFL level, but this could be the game for him. Look for the young gun to get plenty of looks inside 50 and take control of a depleted defence to get himself at least two goals ($3.40).
These two teams don’t like each other – no cross-town rivals ever do. Expect the Swans and the Giants to play a heavily contested brand of football, with a lot of it originating in the centre of the ground.
Both teams have proven talents, but no-one’s pride stings more after a big loss than that of Swans veteran Luke Parker. He was valiant in a team that couldn’t touch the footy against the Cats, and he will look to attack the Giants to ensure the same doesn’t happen this week. Lock in Parker for 25 or more disposals ($1.90).
Key matchup: Toby Greene v Harry Cunningham

Toby Greene is a brilliant player – one who features regularly in these previews as he is always a potential game-breaker. With the new-found responsibility as captain, Greene’s game has gone to another level, averaging over two goals a game and plenty of disposals. Much of the Giants’ offence is run through him, and this week will be no different.
Harry Cunningham for the Swans is the player most likely to go to Greene, especially if Rampe doesn’t come up for the match. This strikes as the best matchup regardless as Cunningham is athletic, uncompromising with contact, a good size, and – most importantly – can make the opposition accountable with offensive run-and-gun. He will need to make Greene as accountable as any player, as restricting him could give his team the best shot at victory.
