Sixers v Renegades match preview

The BBL14 train heads to the SCG on Monday night, where the Sydney Sixers will host the Melbourne Renegades in one of the more intriguing matches in the Big Bash League.

The Sixers are one of the favourites with top sports bookmakers at $5 before their first game, while the Renegades are around an $11 quote to lift the BBL trophy.

Having had to settle for another runner-up finish in BBL13, the Sydney Sixers have a relatively unchanged squad for this season, with all of their local brigade barring Steve O’Keefe (retired) returning for another crack at BBL glory.

England all-rounder Tom Curran (Stars) has been essentially replaced by West Indian all-rounder Akael Hosein, who comes to the Harbour City after an impressive stint with the Renegades.

The Melbourne Renegades have been busy in the off-season, with plenty of players leaving or heading into retirement.

Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh (retired) leave a big experience void for the red side of Melbourne, as do Nic Maddinson (Thunder) and Peter Siddle (Stars).

However, the ‘Gades have brought in some serious hitting power, with Josh Brown (Heat) set to join Jake Fraser-McGurk at the top of the order, while Englishman Laurie Evans (Scorchers) and Kiwi Tim Seifert are sure to bring some much-needed experience into an improving Renegades lineup.

Sixers vs Renegades predictions

What the Renegades lack in experience, they make up for in firepower, and that could be the difference when they head to the SCG on Monday. The enigmatic Jake Fraser-McGurk and brute force that is Josh Brown could almost take the game away from the Sixers in the opening powerplay. Fraser-McGurk and Brown both have strike rates around 150 and with the likes of Laurie Evans and Will Sutherland to back them up later in the innings, as well as an underrated bowling lineup featuring Adam Zampa, the Renegades present great value with BlondeBet to cause an upset at $2.13.

Josh Brown ended BBL13 in the best way possible, lifting his former team, the Brisbane Heat, to victory in the final with a 38-ball 53 on a tricky surface. He has scored a 50 in each of his last two at bats in the Big Bash, and returning to the SCG is sure to give him all the necessary motivation to kick off his Renegades career in style. Short square boundaries will only help him, and at $4.50 with Unibet, he is a great bet to be the Renegades top run scorer on Monday night.

Fergus O’Neill is name all Australian fans will know by the end of BBL14 if his recent form for Victoria continues throughout the BBL. The 23-year-old quick has played just two T20’s, but his white ball form so far for the Vics this summer suggests a massive Big Bash is on the cards. He is hard to get away early on and swings the ball both ways, meaning he is sure to cause carnage up front. With $2.55 on offer with Boombet for O’Neill to take two or more wickets, punters could do worse than back Fergus O’Neill in.
