Super Netball introduce latest team after Collingwood collapse
Super Netball suffered a blow with the news Collingwood would depart the league at the end of the 2023 season, but in a major boost a Victorian replacement has been swiftly innovated.
The top-flight netball league has announced the Melbourne Mavericks would be taking the court from 2024, with the outfit set to wear sky blue, pacific cyan and sapphire.
The Sports Entertainment Network (SEN) will make the official name announcement in Melbourne on Wednesday, establishing a unique identity for the club ahead of the 2024 season.
Mavericks General Manager of Netball Shae Bolton-Brown said the excitement was growing and said the public announcement would help them build momentum.
“To have something really tangible for people to start to connect with is going to be massive,” Bolton-Brown said.
In terms of player recruitment, while there might not appear to be any overt connection between them, the incoming coach, Tracey Neville, aims to create a cohesive unit quickly.
She believes that the “maverick spirit” will play a key role in identifying the right players and binding them together.
Australian betting sites do generally have odds on the Super Netball competition, with these expected to be launched later this year, in time for next season.
The Adelaide Thunderbirds won the 2023 Super Netball competition, with the New South Wales Swifts finishing runner up.
