Sua’ali’i benched for Wallabies’ Test against Wales in Cardiff
Joe Schmidt has confirmed that ex-NRL player Joseph Sua’ali’i will start on the bench for Australia’s Test against Wales in Cardiff, a strategic decision following Sua’ali’i’s impressive debut against England.
Schmidt explained that managing Sua’ali’i’s workload was essential after his demanding initiation into the 15-player code.
Despite the excitement surrounding his debut, Schmidt emphasised the importance of giving him time to adapt from the sidelines, especially with four consecutive Tests against highly ranked opponents.
The decision has sparked criticism among rugby union fans, many of whom argue that Sua’alii’s presence in the starting lineup would have generated significant buzz and potentially a greater impact.
However, Schmidt remains focused on balancing player development and team dynamics as the Wallabies aim to build momentum following their 42-37 victory over England as $5.50 underdogs with the top Australian bookmakers.
