Strikers face BBL wooden spoon after Hurricanes defeat
The Adelaide Strikers have suffered their fourth loss in five matches in the 2024-25 BBL, falling by five wickets to the Hobart Hurricanes on Sunday night in Hobart.
The loss shortens Adelaide’s odds to finish bottom of the table this season, with Adelaide Strikers lost D’Arcy Short (1 from 2) early, but gained early momentum through Chris Lynn (49 from 27).
Wicketkeeper Ollie Pope (33 from 27) and captain Alex Ross (47 from 29) kept the scoreboard moving forward in the middle overs for the Strikers before Jamie Overton (27 from 18) and Jamez Bazley (8 from 5) took the visitors to 5/186 from their 20 overs.
In response, the hosts went about their work steadily.
Mitchell Owen (37 from 16) and Matthew Wade (27 from 18) put on 61 runs for the first wicket in in just 4.2 overs.
Things levelled off in the middle overs a little, with steady wickets causing a bit of a wobble by the halfway point.
At 4/101 after 10.4 overs, Tim David walked to the crease and turned the game on its head.
The big-hitting Aussie plundered 62 from 28 in a match-winning innings, motoring Hobart to a five-wicket win with eight balls remaining.
But it was not all plain-sailing for David, with the 28-year-old at one stage sitting on just four runs from 10 balls.
“I said to Nicky (Nikhil Chaudhary) I cannot hit the ball tonight, lucky that I got on a roll,” David reflected after winning player of the match.
“We knew it was going to be a good batting pitch.
“Nice to get some runs out here.
“Love batting here under the lights.
“We (as a team) spoke a lot before the season.
“We have been disappointed with the last couple of seasons and how they went.
“We have found a template that is working well for us and the business end is coming up, and that is what we want to be primed for.”
The Hurricanes’ victory improves their title odds to $5 at Bet365, the second line of betting behind the Sydney Sixers ($3.50) and alongside the Sydney Thunder.
Up next they will face the Thunder in Sydney on Wednesday, with cricket betting sites yet to release odds for the match.
