St Kilda v Richmond AFL R22 match preview
On Sunday afternoon, St Kilda will take on Richmond in an intriguing clash at Marvel Stadium. With just three rounds left in the AFL season, this match is critical for both teams’ finals chances.
The St Kilda Saints played Carlton last weekend, going down by 19 points at Docklands. After a strong first-half performance, the Saints took a 22-point lead into the main break. However, in the second half it was all Carlton, with St Kilda only scoring one goal to the Blues’ seven.
This loss continues St Kilda’s form slide in the back half of the season, as they’ve won only three of their last eight – all against the bottom three sides in the AFL. Sitting only half a game inside the eight, the Saints need to find form quickly or they will miss out on finals footy.
The Richmond Tigers faced the Western Bulldogs last Friday night, going down by 55 points. Disappointing from the beginning, the Bulldogs kicked nine first-quarter goals to take a 44-point lead into quarter time. From there, the match was already won for the Dogs. With Dylan Grimes a late withdrawal, the Richmond key defenders struggled, as 10 goals came from the Bulldogs’ tall forwards.
This loss has dealt a major blow to the Tigers’ finals aspirations, as the now need to win all remaining games while relying on other results to scrape into the eight.
After getting through last weekend unscathed, St Kilda are almost back at full strength as midfielder Seb Ross pushes for a return this week.
The Tigers lost midfielder Jacob Hopper to concussion early in last week’s game, so he will miss this weekend. Half-back Daniel Rioli was troubled by an ankle injury but played out the game. However, in a major boost, the Tigers are expecting the veteran trio of Grimes, Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin to all return after missing last week.

St Kilda v Richmond AFL R22 best bets
The last time these two faced off was in round 14, when the Tigers kicked away late to win by 20 points. This match was the beginning of the slide for the Saints, and not much has changed since. Coming off a nine-day break and boasting several star inclusions, the Tigers look primed for this one as $2.02 outsiders with Bet365.
With the return of Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin, look for Richmond half-forward Shai Bolton to spend less time in the middle and more time inside 50. He has scored at least one goal in all but four games this season, and after a quiet outing last week, we are expecting Bolton to bounce back with two or more majors at $2.70 with top AFL bookmakers.
Averaging 27.8 disposals across the last five weeks, wingman Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera has been a breakout star for the Saints this season. The second-year player has found his role in the side throughout the back half of the season and is collecting plenty of the footy. We like Wanganeen-Milera to continue his good form this weekend, collecting 25 or more disposals at $1.95 with Palmerbet.

Callum Wilkie kept Coleman Medal leader Charlie Curnow to just one goal last week. Consistently containing the best key forwards, the St Kilda stopper is also a major part of the team’s ball movement, collecting averaging better than 20 touches per game. He also leads the AFL for marks.
Leading the Richmond forward line without Tom Lynch, Jack Riewoldt was one of the few positives for the Tigers last weekend with three goals. With excellent small forwards around him, Riewoldt’s role isn’t just kicking goals but also bringing the ball to ground, something that will be needed against the Saints’ key defensive pairing of Wilkie and Josh Battle.
