St Kilda v Geelong AFL R23 match preview
This Saturday night, St Kilda host the Geelong Cats at Marvel Stadium in a match with major implications for the AFL ladder.
The St Kilda Saints played the Richmond Tigers last weekend, winning comfortably at home by 36 points. The match was set up in the first half by the Saints after they kicked 10.2 to take a 29-point lead into the main break. Max King kicked six goals on the day, while Jack Sinclair continued his great form with 33 disposals.
This win leaves the Saints in sixth place, needing just one win from their final two games to guarantee a spot in the 2023 AFL finals.
The Geelong Cats played Collingwood last Friday night, going down by eight points at the MCG. After a hot start, the Cats led by as much as 22 points in the first quarter. However, the Magpies bounced back, going on a seven-goal unanswered streak to flip momentum in the match. The Cats responded by kicking the final three goals of the game, but it wasn’t quite enough.
With the cluster of teams vying for a finals spot, the Cats have now dropped to 11th on the ladder. Needing to win both of their remaining games to make the top eight, it’s now sudden-death football for Chris Scott and co.
After suffering no injuries on the weekend, expect few changes for the Saints this week. Their VFL team had a bye last week, and there is no one returning from injury.
The Cats lost forward Gary Rohan to a hamstring injury against the Magpies and will miss him this weekend. However, key forward Tom Hawkins and midfielder Cam Guthrie are expected to return if they make it through training this week.

St Kilda v Geelong AFL R23 best bets & odds
Historically, the Saints have struggled against Geelong, winning just one of the last eight clashes between the sides. However, the Cats are in the midst of a form slide, having won just one of their past four matches.
Home-ground advantage has not done much for the Saints this season, as they have won just five of their 10 matches as hosts. The Cats have won their only other match at Marvel this year, and with their season on the line, we are backing them to win this match at $1.67 with Palmerbet.
Leading the Cats in disposals this season, defender Tom Stewart has been as reliable as ever. After a poor game last week, where Collingwood players regularly found themselves in space, expect Stewart to bounce back with 25 or more disposals at $1.94 with top AFL bookmakers.
After another great showing last weekend, St Kilda half-back Jack Sinclair is on track for another All-Australian jacket. Averaging 28.6 disposals per game, Sinclair adapts his role depending on the situation of the game, playing in defence, on the wing, or even attending centre bounces. Expect Sinclair to have a major impact once again, collecting 30 or more disposals at $2.08.
Key matchup: Callum Wilkie v Jeremy Cameron

After an impressive seven-goal haul against an undermanned Collingwood backline, Jeremy Cameron faces a greater test this weekend against one of the top defences in the AFL. Callum Wilkie kept Jack Riewoldt to just six touches and a goal last weekend, all while collecting 19 disposals and 11 marks himself. Cameron will be looking to work the St Kilda stopper up the ground, creating distance on the lead. Expect a physical duel all day, with the result likely to go a long way towards deciding the outcome of the match.
