St Kilda vs Fremantle match preview
St Kilda will be looking to break a three-game losing streak when they host Fremantle at Marvel Stadium this Friday night.
The Dockers enter this Round 8 clash as slight favourites with leading AFL bookmakers at $1.73, while St Kilda are at $2.15 despite playing at home. The line is set at 5.5 points.
Last Saturday, the Saints were embarrassed by the Brisbane Lions as they fell by 45 points. The reigning premiers were dominant in all facets of the game, and it was only the Lions’ inaccuracy that kept the margin from blowing out even further.
As a result, Ross Lyon’s side have dropped to 13th on the ladder, with a worrying percentage of just 85.7%. But with their last three matches all coming against in-form teams, there are expectations that the Saints are not as bad as the results would suggest.
On the other hand, Fremantle produced their best result of the season last Friday night, beating Adelaide by 18 points in the West. In an excellent defensive performance, the Dockers kept the visitors to just five goals through the first three quarters, while they held off any hope of a comeback in the fourth.
This takes Fremantle to four wins from their last five games and up to ninth place on the AFL ladder. However, they have only beaten the struggling Richmond away from home, so this match poses as a real test to see if the Dockers have what it takes to be a finals contender.
St Kilda vs Fremantle team news
The Saints will be without utility Mason Wood due to concussion, but they are set to regain former top-10 pick Mattaes Phillipou for his first game of the season after recovering from a leg injury sustained in January. The likes of Angus Hastie and Tobie Travaglia are also in the mix.
Fremantle are also set for a big inclusion as ruckman Luke Jackson returns from a hamstring injury, pairing with Sean Darcy for the first time this season. Oscar McDonald is the likely omission, but don’t expect many other changes to the side.
St Kilda vs Fremantle multi picks
Despite entering this game on a run of three straight losses, early-season wins over Geelong and Port Adelaide have shown that this St Kilda team can compete. The Dockers are known for their struggles on the road, and seeing as Freo lost to Melbourne last time they played away, the Saints offer too much value as underdogs in this clash.
Despite playing in the backline, St Kilda’s Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera has bobbed up with five goals in his last four games. Coming off a season-high 32 disposals against the Lions, back Wanganeen-Milera to continue his solid scoring form with a goal at $2.50 with Neds.
After joining the Dockers in the off-season, half-forward Shai Bolton has had no trouble finding his feet in 2025. While he is known for his goal-kicking abilities, note that the former Tiger has collected 19 or more disposals in four of his last five games. Expect Bolton to continue his good form with 20 or more disposals at $2.10 with major sports betting sites.
