St Kilda v Carlton match preview
On Sunday afternoon, the Carlton Blues will be looking to keep their winning streak going as they take on the St Kilda Saints at Marvel Stadium in round 21 of the AFL.
Last weekend the Saints hosted Hawthorn, winning by 29 points in a high-scoring affair. After a nine-goal first quarter, St Kilda were set for a big day before the Hawks cut the margin to 11 at three-quarter time. Finishing strong, the Saints kicked five goals to two in the last quarter to hold their lead and avoid the upset.
With wins in their last two, the St Kilda Saints sit fifth on the ladder. But with their three wins from their last seven matches coming against the bottom three sides in the AFL, St Kilda will need to show they can beat tougher opponents if they are serious about a finals push.
Carlton faced Collingwood at the MCG last Friday night, winning by 17 points in a blockbuster clash. Facing the top team in the AFL, the Blues were extremely impressive, never looking back after taking the lead in the second quarter. Setting the tone up forward was Coleman Medal leader Charlie Curnow, who kicked six goals, five of which came in the second half.
After starting the season off poorly, the Blues have now won their last six matches to sit seventh on the ladder. But just a game inside the eight, they need to keep winning to hold their position.
Midfielder Zak Jones was an early substitution last weekend after he suffered a medial ligament strain in his knee. However, in more positive news, stars Max King and Brad Hill are both pushing for selection this week as they return from injury.
The Blues lost Adam Cerra to a hamstring strain during Friday night’s clash, with the star midfielder set to miss at least a fortnight. Expect midfielder Paddy Dow to come into the starting line-up after coming on as the sub last week, while veteran Ed Curnow may also be in contention.

St Kilda v Carlton betting predictions
These sides last faced each other in round six as the Saints won by 22 points. However, at that stage St Kilda sat top of the ladder as the in-form team of the AFL. Coming into this week, the Blues are now the form side and look set to continue their run against an inconsistent Saints outfit. With the chance to jump to fifth spot on the ladder, we like the favourites to win at $1.52 with Palmerbet.
Two of the best defences in the AFL, expect a physical, low-scoring affair on Sunday. With five of St Kilda’s last six games going under the total points line, they don’t get blown out when they lose. We are taking under 163.5 total match points at $1.90 with AFL bookmakers.
With injuries to fellow midfielders Adam Cerra and Sam Walsh, look for Carlton captain Patrick Cripps to lift in the middle. With the Saints midfield at full strength, a big performance from Cripps will be needed; otherwise the Blues defenders might find themselves very busy. We like Cripps in this one to collect 25 or more disposals at $1.62.
Key matchup: Callum Wilkie v Charlie Curnow

One of the top one-on-one defenders in the AFL, Callum Wilkie has been one of the main reasons behind the success of the Saints defence this season. Regularly tasked with the opposition’s best forward, Wilkie ranks second in the competition for marks and also finds a way to get involved in St Kilda’s offensive play, averaging 20 disposals per game as a key defender.
Leading the Coleman Medal, Charlie Curnow continued his great form last weekend with six goals against Collingwood. Averaging 3.5 goals a game, it is rare that Curnow doesn’t find a way to play a major part in a game. With barely any tall support in the absence of Harry McKay, Curnow is given plenty of opportunities in the air and has started to make this Carlton forward line his own.
