Sixers vs Stars match preview
The Sydney Sixers will be looking to go 3-0 when they host the struggling Melbourne Stars in T20 Big Bash League action on Boxing Day.
The Sixers continued their unbeaten start to the tournament last Saturday, downing the Thunder by five wickets in a last-ball thriller. In a strong team effort, the Sixers had Josh Philippe (35 off 27), Jack Edwards (28 off 18) and Jordan Silk (36* off 25) all produce important knocks in the chase. However, it was Ben Dwarshuis who was the difference, taking 2/26 and hitting 20 off just eight balls.
With an experienced batting lineup and a strong mix of spin and pace in their bowling attack, the Sixers have one of the most well-balanced teams in the BBL.
At $4.33 with top online bookies, the Sixers are now the outright betting favourites for the BBL title. On the other hand, the Stars have blown out to league-worst odds of $21 to win the tournament.
The Stars have lost all three of their matches so far and sit last on the ladder. Last Friday, they lost to the Strikers by 15 runs at Adelaide Oval. Despite restricting the Strikers to 165, the Stars continuously lost wickets in the chase and failed to build any momentum.
Despite having plenty of star power, the men in green seemingly can’t put it all together. Spin is an obvious weakness for their top order, while their bowling lacks depth outside their frontline pacemen.
The Stars will have one change for this clash as Pakistan international leg-spinner Usama Mir comes in to replace Black Caps fast bowler Adam Milne.
Sixers vs Stars predictions
Given the Sixers’ form, the quality in their side and their home-ground advantage, it is hard to look past them in this clash. They have won 10 of the last 11 matchups between the teams, so back them to win again at $1.72 with major sports betting sites.
Moved up the order due to a season-ending injury to Daniel Hughes, Sydney all-rounder Jack Edwards has had a strong start to BBL14. With knocks of 28 and 37, the 24-year-old has provided great stability in the top order. As the Stars have one of the weaker bowling lineups in the Big Bash, look for Edwards to continue his strong form by hitting 30 or more runs at $2.62 with top Aussie bookmakers.
Despite the Stars’ poor form, captain Marcus Stoinis has been consistent with scores of 37, 26 and 27. He has plenty of BBL and international experience, while his game style will suit the short square boundaries at the SCG. With most of his teammates struggling for runs, back Stoinis as the top Stars batter at $4.33 with top cricket bookies.
