Sinner wins Halle Open, shortens in Wimbledon betting

Jannik Sinner has lived up to the pressure of being world No.1 for the first time, winning the Halle Open in Germany on Sunday.

Sinner defeated Hubert Hurkacz in the final of the ATP 250 tournament, edging the Pole in two tight tiebreak sets, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (2).

The victory has led tennis betting sites to shorten Sinner’s odds to win Wimbledon, which begins next week.

The Italian is now paying just $2.87 to win the year’s third Grand Slam, marginally behind outright favourite Carlos Alcaraz ($2.75).

Winning the Halle Open means Sinner now holds a 38-3 record in 2024. The title was his first on grass and comes after trophies in Melbourne, Rotterdam and Miami already this season.

Sinner’s serve gets the job done in Germany

It’s rare that a player will ever out-serve Hurkacz, particularly on grass.

But in the final of the Halle Open, that’s exactly what Sinner did en route to the title.

The 22-year-old won 44 of 47 points on his first serve, dropping just 11 points in total on serve across the match.

Neither player was broken in the dual-tiebreak clash. However, Sinner’s ability to shut out Hurkacz on serve gave him the upper hand when it came to the business end of the sets.

Speaking after the victory, Sinner’s focus was elsewhere.

“My girlfriend Anna played in Berlin today. She lost, with six match points. So, I’m very sorry for her. She also had an amazing week,” he said.

Wimbledon contenders emerging one week out

With Wimbledon just one week away, a clearer picture is beginning to emerge in the bookmakers’ odds.

The tour’s two bright stars, Sinner and Alcaraz, lead the betting odds. This was already the case this time last month.

However, Sinner’s first grass title and Alcaraz’s performance to win the French Open have only served to solidify their odds.

Next, Novak Djokovic holds the third line of betting at $4.50 with BetOnline. The Serbian is a seven-time champion at Wimbledon, having made the final last year.

If Djokovic is fit and healthy, he will be many punters’ favourite; however, due to recent knee surgery, a big question mark hovers over his participation.

Behind these three, the odds open up significantly. Alexander Zverev ($15) holds the fourth line of betting, with Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz just behind on $17 apiece.

Matteo Berrettini, Jack Draper and Alex de Minaur share the seventh line of betting at $21, with Grigor Dimitrov ($26) close by.
