US Open 2024: Jannik Sinner v Taylor Fritz match preview
World No.1 Jannik Sinner takes on top-ranked American Taylor Fritz in the final of the US Open this Sunday in New York, with history on the line.
Fritz is seeking to become the first American man to win a Grand Slam since 2003, but he is a heavy underdog in his maiden major final.
That is because Sinner has ripped through his half of the draw with ruthless efficiency over the last fortnight. Mackenzie McDonald, Alex Michelsen and Christopher O’Connell were the Italian’s first three victims, all falling in one-sided clashes.
Most recently, Sinner has seen off No.14 seed Tommy Paul, past US Open champion Daniil Medvedev and British No.1 Jack Draper to make the final. In each match he has been remarkably clutch and ground his opponents down with solid baseline tennis.
Fritz has had an excellent run in New York as well.
The world No.12 had never been beyond the last eight of a slam before, but wins over the likes of Matteo Berrettini, Casper Ruud, Alexander Zverev and most recently Frances Tiafoe have booked him a spot in the championship match.
US Open 2024: Sinner v Fritz betting predictions
Sinner will win this match with relative comfort, but we have still found some value at tennis bookmaker outside of a low-paying outright bet on the Italian.
We are tipping Fritz to claim the opening set, which bookmaker Neds has at +175.
Fritz has started strongly in the majority of his matches at this year’s US Open, while Sinner has often taken a few games to get going.
With a packed-out Arthur Ashe Stadium behind him, we can see Fritz nabbing the opener in this match – particularly since he has spoken openly about how relaxed he feels heading into this clash.
He has a much better chance of doing so than winning the match overall, and it still provides excellent value at +175.
