Sinner edges ahead in Wimbledon odds after third round
Five days of Wimbledon 2024 have unfolded, and it’s Jannik Sinner who has got his nose ahead in the outright betting odds at the year’s third Grand Slam in London.
Heading into the tournament, Sinner was neck-and-neck with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz at tennis bookmakers to win the tournament.
However, a pair of contrasting third-round results have seen the Italian edge ($2.50) in front of Alcaraz ($2.75) with the top tennis bookmakers.
Seven-time champion Novak Djokovic remains steady after his two wins, sitting in the third line of betting at $4.50 with Neds to claim a record-equalling third crown.
Alcaraz tested by Tiafoe, Sinner breezes through
Friday at Wimbledon had Carlos Alcaraz facing his first challenge, in the form of 2022 US Open semi-finalist Frances Tiafoe.
The No.3 seed prevailed, but not without a stern test from the American, with the match going to five sets.
Tiafoe came out of the block the quicker of the two, drawing first blood as he claimed the opening set 7-5. Alcaraz responded by winning the second, but Tiafoe wasn’t going away, claimed the third set as well.
Sitting at two sets to one down, Alcaraz was forced to do what he did in consecutive matches to win the French Open last month and win the final two sets.
He did so in style, clinching a fourth-set tiebreak before pulling away 6-2 in the fifth.
Sinner, on the other hand, was completely untroubled by Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.
Having played a challenging four-set match against former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in his previous match, Sinner was in no mood to stick around on Friday afternoon.
The world No.1 tore through the opening set 6-1, then closed out the remaining two sets for the loss of just six more games.
He now faces either Denis Shapovalov or Ben Shelton in the round of 16, while Alcaraz will play Brandon Nakashima or Ugo Humbert.
