Sunday afternoon footy in Round 5 of the 2022 NRL Premiership offers up an interesting clash between the Cronulla Sharks and Wests Tigers at PointsBet Stadium.

The Sharks come in as a $1.12 favourite with BetOnline after impressing against Newcastle in their last start, while the Tigers will be desperate to get their first win, especially after the comical manner in which they gave two points to the Titans.

Cronulla have quickly become the new darling pick to enter the NRL’s top four after three terrific wins on the trot. They’ve settled quickly on what their best 17 looks like as well as the style in which they want to play, which makes them one of the easier teams to pick in the coming weeks.

Led by Dale Finucane in the engine room, the Sharks create space and almost run around you. When they cross halfway their attacking shapes look narrow, but all of a sudden they expand and soon enough their on the outside of a shrinking defensive line.

They showed against Newcastle as well they’re not afraid to move the ball laterally to come off their try line, which makes Ronaldo Mulitalo and Sione Katoa ‘must have’ players in any tryscorer multis. While 18 points doesn’t look like a lot in isolation, they had a few taken off them and Nicho Hynes had a bad day with the boot. There is plenty of points in this team.

Tigers centre James Roberts did handle David Fifita well on an edge last week, but can he back up and contain Siosifa Talakai, who produced one of the best games ever seen from a centre in the NRL era last week. Talakai will be one of the first players picked in the first tryscorer market, currently paying around $12 with online bookmakers.

If there is a way we thought a team could inconceivably lose a game of Rugby League, the Wests Tigers will do their best to play it out in real time. They did a lot right against the Titans and deserved a hard-earned two points, but their last five minutes of game management was terrible.

For all their ‘brave loss’ vibes they received, it just showed that once again no team breaks their fans’ hearts quite like the Tigers do. It’s a big reason why they are a $7 outsider.

You do feel for them in the sense that they competed well with Melbourne before being outclassed, but their losses in Round 3 and Round 4 will be up there with two of the most confusing losses a team will have all season.

The punters certainly feel there is a big gulf in class between the two teams, and as a $7 outsider, they feel that no matter how much effort the Tigers put in, the result can only go one way.

Finding a try scorer for a team who failed to cross last week when they come up against a team who had a clean sheet is troublesome, but Ken Maumalo at $2.88 is a hard one to pass up. He isn’t often at that price, so why not take it on?
