Round 19: Cronulla Sharks vs Wests Tigers preview

The Cronulla Sharks are losing predator status, and it could get worse in round 19 of the 2024 NRL Premiership if they fail to beat the Wests Tigers at PointsBet Stadium on Friday night.

The home side is in a major form slump with single-point losses to the Titans, Bulldogs and Dolphins in recent weeks. The Sharks now sits in fourth place on the NRL ladder, and if every result goes against them this weekend, they could fall out of the top eight.

The Tigers‘ form had improved towards the end of June with wins over the Titans and Raiders before taking on top-four sides Melbourne and Sydney. A win against the Sharks on Friday could be the catalyst for a late-season revival to avoid a third wooden spoon in a row.

Cronulla’s injury woes have gone from bad to worse with superstar halfback Nicho Hynes ruled out for eight weeks with a fractured ankle and complete syndesmosis rupture. Utility forward Siosifa Talakai (suspension) and Jack Williams (ankle) are also out of the side.

Sione Katoa returns from concussion to start on the wing, allowing Daniel Atkinson to move back to five-eighth and Braydon Trindall to cover the halfback position. Teig Wilton has been promoted to the starting second-row position, while Toby Rudolph will come off the bench with Braden Hamlin-Uele, forcing Tuku Hau Tapuha out of the starting 17.

Tigers coach Benji Marshall will be without Justin Olam (knee), so Solomona Faataape shifts to the centres and Alex Lobb starts on the wing. Justin Matamua has been dropped from the interchange, with Reuben Porter named in his place.

Sharks vs Tigers betting predictions

Before this season, the Sharks had won each of their previous four clashes with the Tigers by 13 or more points. When these sides met earlier this year, however, Cronulla went down in a 32-6 shellacking — and that was with Hynes in the side. With the Sharks missing their star playmaker, back the Tigers to win by 12 points or less at +290 with top NRL bookmakers.
