Sharks v Cowboys NRL R7 preview

Round seven of the 2024 NRL Premiership season wraps up in Cronulla on Sunday afternoon with an in-form Sharks outfit hosting the North Queensland Cowboys at PointsBet Stadium.

The Cowboys’ poor discipline cost them against the Eels having convincingly beaten the Titans the week before. On the other side of the park, the Sharks have won four of their last five, including wins over the Warriors and Raiders, with their only loss coming in an injury-ravaged match against the Tigers at Leichhardt Oval.

Cowboys coach Todd Payten will be without Murray Taulagi (hamstring), with Semi Valemei named to play his first game for this season on the wing. The starting side is otherwise unchanged.

With Sione Katoa suspended, Sharks coach Craig Fitzgibbon has handed Samuel Stonestreet his NRL debut on the wing. In the forwards, Tuku Hau Tapuha drops back to the reserves, with Braden Hamlin-Uele named to return from injury via the interchange.

Sharks v Cowboys NRL R7 predictions

The Sharks have been in brilliant form in the opening weeks of the season, while the Cowboys are struggling to find consistency. North Queensland have lost 10 of their last 11 matches against the Sharks, while Cronulla have covered the line in each of their last five matches. Expect a strong performance from the Sharks in front of their home fans as they cover the -3.5 handicap ($1.87).

Sharks backs Ronaldo Mulitalo, Braydon Trindall and Jesse Ramien have all scored multiple tries in recent matches as home favourites. Additionally, Siosifa Talakai has scored a try in each of his three previous home matches against the Cowboys. Despite 10 of the home side’s last 12 matches finishing below the total points line, history suggests this will be a high-scoring clash with more than 45.5 points on the board ($1.90).

Sharks forward Teig Wilton has had a brilliant return to the NRL this season after suffering an ACL injury last year. Last week’s match against the Rabbitohs marked his best performance of the season, with four tackle breaks and two tries in 104 run metres.
