Sharks v Broncos NRL match preview

Round 14 of the NRL Premiership continues on Super Saturday with the Cronulla Sharks hosting the Brisbane Broncos at PointsBet Stadium.

The Sharks had the round 13 bye, while the Broncos travelled to New Zealand and beat the Warriors in Napier. Will the visitors be able to continue winning on the road?

The Sharks have made just one change to their side, with Siosifa Talakai returning from a neck injury to start in the centres. Meanwhile, star halfback Nicho Hynes is expected to back up from State of Origin on Wednesday night.

The Brisbane Broncos have made several changes with the potential for more to be made. Selwyn Cobbo (hip) is under an injury cloud, while Reece Walsh, Thomas Flegler, Payne Haas and Pat Carrigan are all yet to be confirmed after featuring in Origin I. Corey Oates has been named in the reserves as cover for Cobbo, with Deine Mariner, Brendan Piakura, Keenan Palasia, Xavier Willison and Tristan Sailor also on the standby list.

The Sharks and Broncos have met 44 times with the Broncos winning a whopping 27 clashes, including more than half of the matches played in Cronulla. The main concern for the Broncos in the days leading up to this match is the fitness of their star Origin forwards and backs.

Should they fail to back up, or the club opt to rest them, the proposition of going to ‘The Shire’ and winning becomes more difficult. Further, Hynes will likely be at full fitness after playing only 12 minutes for the Blues in midweek. This makes the Sharks a great value bet to cover the -3.5 line at $1.90 with Marantelli Bet.

Teig Wilton has started in every match for the Sharks ahead of club legend Wade Graham this season, despite missing more than three tackles per game on average. With the various changes the Broncos may face in the lead-up to kickoff, captain Adam Reynolds should be looking to his most talented back-rower against the Sharks’ most unreliable.

Jordan Riki has the skill and strength to be one of the best second-rowers in the NRL. If Reynolds can isolate Wilton one-on-one with Riki, or find clear space, the Brisbane forward should score a try at some stage during the match ($4.50).

Meanwhile, the Sharks will be sweating on any opportunity to put their wingers through. Should Cobbo fail to back up from Origin on the right wing, he will be replaced by Arthars or Mariner — shorter and less experienced players for Ronaldo Mulitalo to target.

Similarly, if Oates returns on the left, he will likely be slow to start in his return to first grade up against Sione Katoa. With enough possession, both Mulitalo ($1.65) and Katoa ($1.96) should score a try at any time during the match.

Key matchup: Hynes v Mam

Nicho Hynes was beaten on the outside defensively in Origin I, leading to a try and, ultimately, a loss for the Blues. The Cronulla star now faces a tough task with the speed and agility of Ezra Mam, one of the most electric players in the NRL. If Hynes fails to stand up in defence, the Broncos will become a live chance of upsetting the Sharks at home.
