The BBL 12 season is coming to an end with the Perth Scorchers hosting a most unlikely rival, the Brisbane Heat, at Optus Stadium this Saturday.
The Heat have had a fairytale run, going from last on the ladder to The Final in the space of three weeks. Can they complete what would be one of the most shocking upsets in recent memory?
The Heat head to Perth with a new-look side, missing Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Matt Renshaw. Meanwhile, the Scorchers have had a week of rest in their home city to prepare. Will that be their downfall in the end?
The Heat have been in the rarest of form, taking the long way to the BBL Final. However, the Scorchers appear another class above any side in the competition and should be far too hard to beat at home. Perth deserve to be clear favourites and should be winning at $1.36 odds with Marantelli Bet.
The bowling attacks of the Heat and Sixers are very similar in what they offer, which will play right into the favour of the Scorchers. The Heat should be able to take early wickets — unlike their last trip to Perth — which will give Ashton Turner a chance to spend some time at the crease. Turner is one of the best middle-order batters in the country; his calmness and 360-degree scoring ability makes him almost impossible to bowl to. He will certainly be able to attack an inexperienced Heat bowling attack, making him a good shout to be the Scorchers’ leading runscorer for the match ($7).
Andrew Tye is the third-highest wicket-taker in BBL 12 and still one of the smartest, most skilled white-ball bowlers in the country. Tye can use the pace and bounce of the Optus Stadium wicket to dismiss batsmen, while also taking the pace off the ball and out-thinking opposition batters. While being uncharacteristically expensive against the Heat this season, he took three wickets in his four overs against them in Perth and is more than likely to repeat this effort Saturday ($3.75).
Key matchup: Andrew Tye v Michael Neser
Both of these seamers sit top three in the wicket-taking charts for BBL 12. However, they are very different bowlers that play to their strengths brilliantly. Michael Neser will have the enormous role of leading the bowling attack and likely needing lower-order runs with the bat. The bigger the effect Neser has, the more he will be able to cancel out Tye’s impact and give the Heat their best chance of winning.
