Scorchers’ BBL season on the rocks after loss to Thunder

Scorchers lose to the Thunder

The Perth Scorchers are all but out of the 2024-25 BBL title race after suffering a 61-run loss to the Sydney Thunder on Monday night in Sydney.

Sydney batted first and were in trouble initially, with all of their top six bar Sam Konstas removed for single digits.

The 19-year-old went on to score a crucial 42-ball 53, and with help from Chris Green (20 from 16) and Tom Andrews (37 from 13) helped the Thunder rebuild.

Andrews would win player of the match for his effort, eviscerating 25 runs from the final over to see his side through to a competitive 7/158.

Needing a win to keep their slim title hopes alive, the Scorchers were in trouble early when Sam Fanning (1 from 1) and Finn Allen (9 from 6) fell in the second over.

Aaron Hardie (22 from 17) and Cooper Connolly (8 from 6) briefly had the chase on track, but a pearler from Tanveer Sangha ended the partnership and sparked the beginning of Perth’s demise.

Folding for 97 runs from just 17.2 overs, the Scorchers now sit firmly on the bottom of the BBL standings.

Big Bash bookies have Perth quoted at $23 for them to make the top four – and $126 to win the title – with just a mathematical chance of them qualifying for the post-season now.

The Thunder, meanwhile, go top of the table with 11 points and are assured of a playoff berth.

BlondeBet lists the Thunder at $4.33 to win the title, behind the Hobart Hurricanes ($3) and Sydney Sixers ($3.25).

Next up, the Thunder take on fellow title contenders the Sixers on Friday night in Sydney, while the Scorchers head home to host the Adelaide Strikers on Saturday.
