San Telmo ready for 2200 metres
San Telmo has shown his trainer he is ready to run a strong 2200 metres in the Magic Millions Trophy after a solid performance at Doomben.
San Telmo ran third in a good standard race over 2020m on Saturday at his second run back from a spell to give Brad Smith confidence he is on the right track.
“He had to chase the tearaway leader, Lever Lever, and take the field up to him. It was a good effort under his big weight and he will drop down in weights in the Trophy,” Smith said.
“Also he was exposed a bit early because Josh (jockey Oliver) had to get going early to chase the leader.”
“All in all it was a good run and the 2200 metres should suit.”
The Magic Millions Trophy is the previous Magic Millions Stayers Cup and will be run at 2200m for the first time at the Gold Coast on January 14.
Stablemate La Dolce Vita is set to make her return to racing at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.
La Dolce Vita was scratched from the Class Three Plate at Doomben on Saturday after she drew a wide barrier.
Smith said La Dolce Vita would run in the Class Four race on Wednesday and press on into the summer.
La Dolce Vita has won three of her nine starts and was stakes-placed in the 2015 Gold Edition Stakes.
“She has plenty of ability but she has a few tricks,” Smith said.
