Round five of the 2023 NRL Premiership kicks off in Sydney with the Roosters hosting the Parramatta Eels at Allianz Stadium this Thursday night. The Eels recorded their first win of the season over the Panthers last week and will need to beat a well-rested Roosters side to get their second.
The Sydney Roosters will be without star centre Joseph Manu through suspension, with Drew Hutchison named as his replacement, while Naufahu Whyte and Corey Allan have been added to the bench this week. The Eels have been forced to bring Wiremu Greig into the starting side in place of the suspended Junior Paulo.
Two of the three sides to have byes so far this season have won their first match back from the break, which should bring confidence to the Roosters camp. A weakened forward pack will make life more difficult for the Eels against a refreshed Roosters side, who should be able to secure the win at home at $1.52 with Marantelli Bet.
Since its recent upgrade, Allianz Stadium is proving to be one of the best scoring grounds in the country. A fast, dry track should give both sides plenty of opportunities to score points. Both have dynamic wide-running forwards and outside backs who love scoring tries. Look for this to be a high-scoring affair that exceeds 40.5 total match points ($1.90).
Lining up in opposite corners of the field are Maika Sivo and Daniel Tupou, two of the best try-scoring wingers in the NRL. Both sides have dangerous left-edge attacks, running through Dylan Brown for the Eels and Luke Keary for the Roosters, designed to give their stars time and space to attack the corner. Both are threats travelling through the air, which should see Tupou ($1.83) and Sivo ($2.05) score tries at any time during this match.
Key matchup: Tedesco v Gutherson

The battle of the fullbacks on Thursday makes this match so much more interesting when considering the recent news of the Eels looking for another custodian. Clint Gutherson, like James Tedesco, can get through an enormous amount of hard work to get his side on the front foot, something that is never overlooked. Where Gutherson lets himself down is his lack of ball-playing skill, an area Tedesco has improved significantly throughout his career. Gutherson will have no better yardstick for where his game needs to get to in order to give the Eels an NRL Premiership title, but will he be able to stand up and deliver?
