Roosters coach questions controversial calls in Panthers loss
Roosters Coach Trent Robinson raised concerns about the controversial obstruction calls in their loss to the Penrith Panthers during a press conference in round 4 of the NRL season.
He expressed confusion and frustration over the try of Joey Manu, which was overturned due to an obstruction call against Jared Waerea Hargreaves.
Despite being a massive distance from the ball, Waerea Hargreaves was deemed to have obstructed Dylan Edwards tackle attempt.
Robinson highlighted inconsistencies in officiating and questioned the application of the obstruction rule, citing instances where similar situations had different outcomes.
He also expressed worries, about how these rulings impact plays and criticised the NRL’s handling of decisions.
Sydney Roosters captain James Tedesco, expressed his astonishment regarding the obstruction call, highlighting the challenge for a fullback to defend over such a distance.
He was disappointed about missing out on scoring two tries in the half.
With the debate surrounding the referee’s decisions, Robinson recognised the performance of the Penrith Panthers and admitted that they outperformed his team that evening.
The Penrith Panthers ended up defeating the Sydney Roosters 22-16, as the top NRL bookmakers were offering a generous $2.45 with captain Nathan Cleary out due to injury.
With the roosters currently 4th on the NRL ladder with two wins and two losses, they will be looking to redeem themselves against the Canterbury Bulldogs in round 5 of the 2024 NRL Premiership.
