Roman Typhoon storms home in Highway

Roman Typhoon has overcome his own immaturity to claim the Highway Handicap at Rosehill with Brenton Avdulla working overtime to get him to the line.

A $3 chance after the scratching of Highway Sixtysix at the barrier, Roman Typhoon came from last in the seven-horse field to nail Bon Allen ($20) by a long head in Saturday’s 1100m-race for country-trained horses.

Trainer Jan Bowen fitted winkers to Roman Typhoon but said she would consider the more stringent blinkers if he showed he needed them.

“He didn’t have he easiest of runs,” Bowen said.

“I think he will get further than 1100 metres and there’s a 1400 metre-race in a couple of weeks so we’ll look at that.

“We will keep the winkers on for his next start but he may need blinkers later.

“He is still learning what it’s about.”

Avdulla said he was confident the horse could have won with more authority had he done things right.

“He gave me a hard ride,” he said.

“I was always confident if I could get him to concentrate he would win.

“He wasn’t overly nice with me but that’s just immaturity. He still isn;t sure what to do.”

Roman Typhoon ran fourth in a similar race a week ago won by the Danny Williams-trained Highway Sixtysix who sat down in the barrier, necessitating her withdrawal.

She has been ordered by stewards to perform successfully in a barrier trial before she races again.
