Rinky Hijikata’s dream shattered in 2023 US Open defeat
Rinky Hijikatas hopes of making a run at the 2023 US Open were shattered on Monday morning when he faced a crushing defeat from American player Frances Tiafoe.
Despite being an underdog and gaining popularity with victories, Hijikata struggled from the start.
The spirited New York crowd seemed to be against him, adding to the pressure of spoiling their home country’s celebration.
Tiafoe, recognized as a rising star in tennis, faced resistance as he swiftly won the match in straight sets, 6 1 6 1 6 4 in just under two hours.
Unfortunately, for Hijikata, who appeared to be dealing with a side strain injury, his serve lacked rhythm.
Despite the defeat, Hijikata’s remarkable journey in New York will always be remembered as one of the top Aussie underdog stories in tennis history.
As a 22-year-old player ranked 110th globally, he can return to Australia with his head held high, knowing that he possesses the skills to compete against the best players in the world. For Tiafoe, this victory serves as encouragement as he pursues his goal of becoming the first American male to win a Grand Slam title since Andy Roddick accomplished it in 2003.
Now the 24 year old will face either Rafael Nadal or Carlos Alcaraz in a quarterfinal match.
