This Sunday afternoon sees the MCG play host to a clash between the Richmond Tigers and the West Coast Eagles, two teams having disappointing seasons and desperately looking for positives.
Following last weekend’s poor loss to the Gold Coast Suns, the Tigers now sit 16th on the ladder. Having lost their last five games in a row, there are clear signs that change is needed. Going down by 24 points, there is still the thought of missed opportunity as they kicked 6.12 as opposed to the accurate 11.6 of the Suns. Although not a sole factor for this poor run of form, Richmond have only once kicked more goals than behinds this season — in their round two win against the Adelaide Crows.
Having traded away much of their draft capital – such as their 2023 first-round pick – in ‘win now’ moves in the off-season, the Tigers are not where they would have hoped to be coming into the season. Injuries to co-captain Toby Nankervis and 2022 Richmond leading goalkicker Tom Lynch have derailed Richmond’s season, leaving them as the third lowest scoring team in the competition.
Having won just once, as well as a draw, there have been few positives for the Tigers, but this weekend shapes as the perfect opportunity to get a win on the board and get back into some form. Back at their favoured home ground, the Richmond forwards will be expecting to get a multitude of opportunities, something they have struggled with so far this season.
One player who is particularly down this season is small forward Shai Bolton. First-time All-Australian last year, Bolton has struggled to hit the scoreboard, kicking only seven goals this season and only one in the last three weeks. As one of the elite small forwards in the competition, we can’t expect this form to last for long. He will get plenty of chances this week and should slot two or more goals ($1.61).

Last weekend, the West Coast Eagles kicked their lowest score of the season (44) in a humiliating 108-point loss to Carlton at Optus Stadium. A nine-goal effort from Charlie Curnow embarrassed the Eagles defence, while Carlton’s forwards had a field day with 12 individual goalscorers.
Sitting 18th, it’s going to be a long season for the Eagles, who have once again been decimated by injuries. West Coast appear to only have 26 players available for selection this weekend, leaving them with no-one spare once they fill their emergency list.
This situation is all too familiar for the Eagles, who at multiple points last season had to call upon top-up players to fill roster spots due to injury and illness. Although this situation may be fortuitous long-term, as it allows young players to get game time, currently it leaves the Eagles without many of their most important players.
While looking for value in the betting markets, the form of Jayden Short over the last two games has been exceptional, gathering 30 and 32 disposals respectively. Saturday’s game appears another opportunity for Short to get a heap of footy, as the Tigers love the use of his booming right foot inside 50. Take him for 25 or more disposals at $1.71 with Marantelli Bet.
West Coast should be no match for the Tigers this weekend as their depleted list makes the trip over from Perth. Across all aspects of the game, Richmond should be clear of the Eagles. Although there is minimal value on the Tigers at $1.11, there are chances of showers on Saturday afternoon, and paired with an underperforming forward line, the handicap of -39.5 could be too much on the day.
Key matchup: Taranto v Kelly
Tim Tarantovs Tim Kelly |

188cm | Height | 183cm |
87kg | Weight | 85kg |
121 | Games | 109 |
50 | Goals | 69 |
30.7 | 2023 disposal average | 29.4 |
Tim Taranto has been heavily scrutinised throughout this season for his ball use, becoming an easy target for the media as the Tigers continue to lose games. However, based off his stats he is having a career-best season. Taranto ranks seventh in the competition for disposals and fourth for tackles, showing his two-way running capabilities. This weekend provides another opportunity to collect a heap of the football while hopefully improving upon his kicking efficiency both across the field and in front of goal.
Tim Kelly is having a career-best season in a heavily undermanned Eagles midfield. Ranked 11th in the competition for disposals, he has had the ball on a string while also adding some much-needed scoreboard impact with four goals so far this year. If West Coast can cause any sort of problems for the Tigers, Kelly will need to be at the centre of it.
