Richmond v Hawthorn R14 preview
Hawthorn will be looking to extend their hot streak this Saturday afternoon at the MCG when they face Richmond in round 14 of the 2024 AFL Premiership season.
The Hawks enter this clash as firm favourites at $1.53 with BoomBet, while Richmond are paying $2.75 with Bet365. The line is set at 13.5 points.
Last Thursday, Richmond secured their second win of the season as they beat the Crows by eight points at Adelaide Oval. Despite coming in as major underdogs, a strong defensive performance coupled with a six-goal third quarter set up the win.
It was an impressive performance in a disappointing year for Adem Yze’s side. Despite sitting in 17th, top Australian bookmakers think the Tigers will improve over the rest of the season, as they have long odds of $5 to finish last.
Playing in game 300, Richmond hero Dustin Martin is set to return alongside key forward Tom Lynch. However, midfielder Dion Prestia suffered another soft tissue injury against the Crows and will be unavailable.
Hawthorn secured another victory in round 13 as they beat the GWS Giants by six points in Launceston. Despite trailing by 19 points at half-time, the Hawks kicked six goals to two in the third term to take the lead into the final break. In a back-and-forth final quarter, the match looked set to end in a draw before Hawthorn forward Luke Breust was controversially given a late free kick to slot the winning goal.
With five wins from their last six matches, the Hawks are one of the form sides in the competition. However, as they sit 12th on the ladder with a percentage of just 88.1, AFL bookies are giving them the long odds of $6 to make the top eight.
The Hawks could have a couple of big inclusions, with key forward Mitch Lewis and ruckman Lloyd Meek both pushing for selection after some time on the sidelines. First-round pick Nick Watson has shown stellar form in the VFL, which could put him in line for a recall.

Richmond v Hawthorn match predictions
While the Tigers are set to regain some stars, their injury woes have turned this season into a real slog. On the other hand, Hawthorn have responded from their 0-5 start with some big performances against other finals contenders. With percentage a clear concern, this match presents as the perfect opportunity for the Hawks to pile on some points as they cover the line of -13.5 at $1.91 with online bookmakers.
In his 300th game, it is hard to see Richmond superstar Dustin Martin having a quiet day. Before missing the last two weeks, he put together a big performance with three goals against the Bombers. The 2017 Brownlow Medal winner has kicked multiple goals in three of his last four matches against the Hawks, so back him in for three or more at $2.80 with top Australian bookies.
A big reason behind the Hawks’ change in form, Will Day has barely missed a trick since returning from injury in round seven. Averaging 25.5 disposals per game over the last four weeks, he has been an incredibly consistent performer in the midfield unit. With the Tigers’ engine room still missing key personnel, expect the 23-year-old to continue his great form with 25 or more disposals at $1.70 with top AFL betting sites.
