Richmond v GWS Rd 18 match preview
Richmond welcome back some big names for their round 18 clash with the resurgent GWS Giants at the MCG this Sunday.
With just two wins for the season, Richmond sit rooted to the bottom of the AFL ladder. They were outclassed by the Dockers in round 17, kicking a mere 54 points to lose by 51.
The Tigers are the lowest-scoring side in the competition, averaging less than nine goals per game. In a dire set of numbers, they rank 16th for inside 50s, 17th for kicks and 18th for tackles.
Dion Prestia returns to the Richmond side in a huge boost for the midfield. Samson Ryan, Steely Green, James Trezise and Thomson Dow have also been added to the extended squad. Seth Campbell takes the week off to manage his physical wellbeing, and Kane McAuliffe has been omitted following some lacklustre efforts.
GWS produced a scintillating burst of attacking football in round 17, kicking nine straight goals across the second and third quarters to ground a high-flying Carlton side. The win snapped a two-game losing streak and sent the Giants back into the top eight by virtue of a higher percentage than the Pies and Demons.
The Giants play a high-disposal brand of football that can either run an opposition team ragged, or come spectacularly unstuck when pressure is applied. This strategy is supported by fierce defence, and the Giants land an average of 63 tackles per game — the fourth-highest number in the AFL.
GWS will field a largely unchanged side. Lachie Ash, Xavier O’Halloran and Jacob Wehr have all been added to the extended squad, but winning form is good form and no other changes have been made to the team’s makeup.

Richmond v GWS Giants betting strategy
It is hard to look past the Giants after their impressive return to form against the Blues. They should have too much talent for the hapless Tigers, covering the 27.5-point line to return $1.91 on Bet365.
GWS veteran Callan Ward was one of his side’s best against the Blues, gathering 30 disposals and kicking two goals. The former Bulldog has now booted multiple majors in three consecutive matches, so there is great value in his $2.40 anytime goalkicker price on Neds.
GWS small forward Brent Daniels finds plenty of the ball at ground level and is averaging 17.6 disposals per game in 2024. The 25-year-old played a huge role in the round 17 win with 29 touches, and he might get loose against this struggling Richmond side and gather 20 or more disposals at $2.05 with top AFL bookmakers.
