Round 7’s prime Sunday slot features what should be an interesting contest between the Richmond Tigers and the Gold Coast Suns at Marvel Stadium. The horror show that is Richmond’s start to the season continued with last week’s loss to Melbourne, while the Suns were able to find form by belting a woeful Kangaroos team.
Richmond have started the 2023 AFL season in worse shape than they would have ever expected, given the hype surrounding them coming into Round 1. We are at Round 7 now and the Tigers have only won one game.
It’s really difficult to put a finger on the issue; perhaps it’s the cohesive balance of a team that now has two different stars running through the middle, or even something as simple as a confidence issue. Form comes from confidence, confidence comes from wins, but wins comes from form. It’s a real dilemma for the Tigers.
But this weekend is a brilliant chance for them to get a win, as they play a team that is not one for travelling and will be doing that without its best player. Touk Miller is the beast of the Suns midfield, but he busted up his knee pretty badly against the Roos and will be unavailable to play the Tigers.
The Richmond midfield will be breathing a sigh of relief, as their elite ball-winners will now come up against a team of youngsters who are still finding their feet in the middle. It’s almost assured that Richmond’s mids, led by Tim Taranto and Dustin Martin, can win the clearance game and give their forwards first use en route to a win at $1.37 with Marantelli Bet.

The theme of this preview has been ‘form’, and a player who looks to be coming into some is former No.1 pick Matt Rowell. In the past couple of weeks, the Suns gun has lifted his game to something like the levels we saw before injury cut short his explosive debut season.
He may have only had 18 disposals last week, but Rowell’s relentless pressure shook a Kangaroos midfield that was led by the usually unflappable Ben Cunnington. The confidence builds with each game he is out on the park, and with Miller out, expect Rowell to take the reins of the midfield and go for at least 20 disposals ($1.47).
With Tom Lynch out, Richmond have been looking for different avenues to goal. Samson Ryan has looked good as his replacement; he is good at drawing the defence away from Jack Riewoldt, and he is just impossibly tall. But it’s his mid-sized teammate that has been catching the eye in the past few weeks.
Noah Cumberland had one of those games last Friday night; he played an unreal first term and then decided to go quiet for the remainder. Nevertheless, three goals in a quarter isn’t anything to scoff at. Cumberland will get plenty of opportunities this weekend, and he likes Marvel Stadium – at least enough that he should put two goals on the board ($1.69).
Key matchup: Taranto v Rowell

Taranto is one of those players that could find the needle in a haystack, particularly if said needle was attached to a Sherrin. But despite finding a mountain of ball this season, Taranto has had no space to really use it to the best of his ability. This has really hampered his side, especially when they want to get an effective ball inside 50 and win.
The Gold Coast Suns will be all too aware of this. As previously mentioned, Rowell will lift in the middle for his side, with his main weapon being pressure and intent. While the Suns might not be able to stop Taranto finding the ball, they can disrupt his usage and cause turnovers. Rowell had 12 tackles last week, and we can expect similar levels as he hunts the Tigers’ top accumulator.
