Richmond v Carlton match preview
Carlton will be looking to secure their fifth consecutive victory this Sunday afternoon as they face the struggling Richmond at the MCG in round 16 of the 2024 AFL season.
The Blues are heavy favourites at $1.11 with Unibet, while the Tigers are outsiders at $8 with Bet365. The line is set at 43.5 points.
Before their bye in round 15, Richmond fell by 48 points to Hawthorn at the MCG. In Dustin Martin’s 300th game, the Tigers kicked the first goal and then struggled, adding just five more while losing every quarter.
Sitting in 17th, it has been a very disappointing season for Adam Yze’s men. With just two wins all season, they have odds of $2.80 with top AFL bookmakers for the wooden spoon.
Adding to Richmond’s extensive injury list, key forward Tom Lynch has been ruled out with a hamstring strain. However, midfielder Jacob Hopper has been named to return, while mid-season draftee Jacob Blight is set to make his debut in defence.
Carlton continued their excellent run of form last Friday, beating Geelong by 63 points at the MCG. Arguably their most impressive performance of the season, the Blues could not be stopped going forward as they put up 138 points. Tom De Koning was excellent in the ruck with 25 disposals, 34 hitouts and a goal, while midfield pair Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh combined for 74 touches.
Second on the ladder, Carlton have shown their premiership credentials over the past month. As a result, leading Australian bookmakers have Michael Voss’ men as second favourites to lift the cup at $4.50.
The Blues are also set for a boost at selection this week as gun midfielder Adam Cerra returns from injury.

Richmond v Carlton predictions
Based on form, availability and motivation, it is clear to see why Carlton enter this match as such heavy favourites. Their midfield is unstoppable right now, while they have averaged over 110 points in their past four matches. At $1.70 with leading online bookmakers, back the Blues to win by 40 points or more.
Coming off a two-month break due to a wrist injury, Richmond midfielder Tim Taranto has returned in excellent form with 26 and 33 disposals in his two games back. He has collected more than 30 touches in two of his last three matches against the Blues, so back him to do it again at $2.50 with top sports betting sites.
Having a stellar month of football, Carlton’s Tom De Koning has solidified his spot as the number one ruckman at the club. The 24-year-old’s athleticism is his greatest strength, as he excels both in the air and around the ground. De Koning is averaging better than 23 disposals per game over the last four weeks, so there is good value in backing him for 25 or more at $2.55 with leading Australian bookies.
