Richmond hero Jack Riewoldt joins growing list of AFL retirees
Jack Riewoldt has added his name to the growing list of AFL stars stepping away from the game this year.
The Richmond Tigers forward will announce on Tuesday afternoon that the 2023 season – his 17th in senior footy – is to be his last.
The news comes after former Tigers captain Trent Cotchin confirmed his retirement last week.
The pair featured in three premierships together between 2017 and 2020, both playing critical roles in returning the club to its former glory after more than three decades in the wilderness.

With 346 AFL appearances to date, Riewoldt sits second only to the great Kevin Bartlett (403) in senior games for the Tigers.
His career tally of 786 goals puts him 13th in the all-time VFL/AFL rankings, while he sits third for Richmond behind only Jack Titus (970) and Matthew Richardson (800).
The 34-year-old is on track to win the Michael Roach Medal as Richmond’s leading goalkicker for the 12th time, while he also has two Jack Dyer Medals and three All-Australian nods to his name.
Coming a day after West Coast’s Nic Naitanui called time on his career, Riewoldt’s announcement adds another big name to an already star-studded list of AFL retirees in 2023.
Topped by Sydney and Hawthorn superstar Lance Franklin, the list also includes four-time flag winner Isaac Smith, Eagles premiership heroes Shannon Hurn and Luke Shuey, and North Melbourne veterans Ben Cunnington and Jack Ziebell.
