Ref rage, big upsets & the best of Twitter for NRL Round 8
THERE are still two fixtures to play in the 2017 NRL ANZAC round, but the weekend games have produced no shortage of talking points.
The refs copped an earful after a spiteful clash between Broncos and the Rabbitohs, the Panthers clinched the battle of the west and a few key upsets made life hell for tipsters and punters.
Let’s see what Twitter had to say.
Refs savaged as Broncos edge Bunnies
South Sydney fans were seeing more red than green after the Rabbitohs’ narrow defeat to Brisbane Broncos on Friday night.
The Bunnies went down by a solitary point after falling on the wrong side of a series of questionable refereeing decisions.
I actually can’t speak. Souths have been well and truly robbed out of this game. #NRLRabbitohsBroncos

@NRL u seriously have to investigate ur officials for match fixing!! This is absolutely diabolical tonight.!! ??#NRLRabbitohsBroncos
— Scotty Lee ?? (@ScottLee80) 21 April 2017
The Rabbitohs were dudded on more than one occasion tonight! #NRLRabbitohsBroncos
— The Profits NRL Guru (@NRL_TheProfits) 21 April 2017
The officials were not the only ones to cop a virtual earful from the Souths faithful.
They had plenty to say about George Burgess, whose contributions proved decisive for all the wrong reasons.
There it is! Another stupid George Burgess incident. If you shook his head, you’d hear a rattle. #NRLRabbitohsBroncos

Panthers plummet as Eels win westies derby
Why do punters keep throwing money at Penrith week after week?
Some are starting to see the light after the Panthers went down to Parramatta in Saturday’s battle of the west.
Remind me to never tip Penrith again #NRLEelsPanthers
— Eden Richards (@Eden_Richards) 22 April 2017
If Penrith lose next week, their over/under total wins bet for the year will already be settled. In April. #NRLEelsPanthers

“I feel sorry for Penrith fans”
– Wests Tigers fans

There was little sympathy for Panthers captain Matt Moylan, who seemed all too happy to delegate his leadership duties.

While observers were not overly impressed with the quality of football on display, the Eels produced the odd highlight in what was a statistically dominant performance.

Cowboys outclass brave Knights
Up in the Hunter Valley, North Queensland returned to winning ways with a 24-12 result against a valiant Newcastle side.
We’re back baby! ??#NRLCowboysKnights #ridemcowboys pic.twitter.com/d6TWPdoix0
— Bluey (@CowboysBluey) 22 April 2017
It wasn’t all classical, free-flowing stuff from the Cowboys, however, with a number of folks on Twitter singling out this interesting technique for playing the ball:
Here’s a play the ball North Queensland Cowboys style … play on, of course! #NRLCowboysKnights pic.twitter.com/YtjjyaGHKy
— Marathon Stadium (@1988Knights) 22 April 2017
Kalyn Ponga pulled no punches against his future club, crossing twice for the visitors in a display that left Knights fans feeling somewhat conflicted.

Up ups go down down in shock Titans loss
Cronulla copped their third home defeat of the season on Saturday night, leading some punters to posit that the defending premiers might be better off giving Shark Park a miss for the rest of the year.
The Sharks & Manly have submitted applications to play the remainder of their home games for 2017 at the away teams grounds #NRLSharksTitans

Gold Coast were decent value for their win, with Jarryd Hayne earning plenty of plaudits after an outstanding display on his comeback.
That was a 2016 pre-Hayne Titans win, with Hayne. Whoa.#NRLSharksTitans
— Nathan (@SeaEagleSpur) 22 April 2017
Peats has to be the @NSWRL #9 and if Hayne stays fit I’d be picking him at #6. Despite the critics, the bloke isa superstar #NRLSharksTitans

Less positive were the reviews for Titans import Dan Sarginson, who has looked a grade or two out of his comfort zone so far in his brief NRL career.
Tonight, Dan Sarginson has done the impossible – he’s made Gold Coast Titans fans hope Will Zillman recovers from injury. #NRLSharksTitans
— Cal (@BigCalGC) 22 April 2017
I feel sorry for Sarginson. He is so far out of his depth. Not a shadow of a first grader #NRLSharksTitans

Twitter has voted sarginson biggest import letdown since sam tomkins #NRLSharksTitans

Tigers maul Bulldogs in another ANZAC upset
Picking up where Gold Coast left off, Wests claimed their third win of the season with a shock 18-12 result over Canterbury on Sunday.
The ‘in crisis’ Tigers have now won more games than the ‘premiership favourites’ Penrith. #NRLTigersBulldogs

Yet it was a win tinged with bitterness as Tigers fans voiced their displeasure at club captain Aaron Woods, who is tipped for a move to Bankstown in 2018 after being snapped in a clandestine cafe catch-up with Bulldogs players.

Doggies fans had similar feelings towards Greg Eastwood, whose bizarre decision to kick midway through the tackle count late in the game proved most costly.
HIA test might need reviewing after Greg Eastwood passed it, came back on & kicked on the 3rd of a 7 tackle set! #NRLTigersBulldogs #Fool
— Fifth and Last (@fifthnlast) 23 April 2017
Eastwood would fit right in at Penrith with plays like that. #NRLTigersBulldogs
— Dazza_20 (@Dazza_20) 23 April 2017
No truth to the rumour Des Hasler just shot Greg Eastwood behind ANZ Stadium. Probably should for that kick though.#NRLTigersBulldogs
