Rashid Khan replacement named as Strikers boost BBL squad
The Adelaide Strikers have secured a significant addition ahead of the forthcoming KFC BBL|13 season with the signing of seasoned left-arm fast bowler, David Payne.
The Strikers have drifted in Big Bash League odds, after being at around the $7.50 quote following the news Rashid Khan would not play this season, with bookmakers now pricing them as long as $9.
The addition of Englishman Payne goes someway to alleviating the loss of Khan, but it is exceptionally hard to replace one of the all-time greats of the Big Bash League.
At 32 years old, Payne’s extensive experience spans 153 T20 fixtures worldwide, boasting a formidable record of 188 wickets at an impressive average of 22.83.
His prowess on the field includes a career-best 5-24, highlighting his ability to swing the ball with precision and pace, a trait that promises to bolster the Strikers’ bowling lineup.
This marks Payne’s return to the BBL following a stint with the Perth Scorchers in BBL|12, where he played a crucial role in the team’s triumph, clinching 10 wickets in six games, including the BBL Final victory.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Strikers Head Coach Jason Gillespie said Payne was not only a talented recruit, but one that improves the club’s culture.
“We are thrilled to have David join our squad for the upcoming BBL season,” the former Australian paceman said.
“His wicket-taking ability, skills on the field, and positive influence will undoubtedly elevate our team.”
Eager to make his mark in Adelaide, Payne is eager to showcase his talent to the passionate Strikers supporters, especially on the iconic stage of Adelaide Oval.
“New Year’s Eve in particular is a game with an awesome reputation and I know that is going to be a really special night to be a part of,” Payne said.
His arrival comes as a replacement for Rashid Khan, who had to withdraw from BBL|13 due to a back injury necessitating surgery.
