Prime-time Saturday night will be the Round 3 clash between the Canberra Raiders and Gold Coast Titans in the nation’s capital. Both sides have started the 2022 NRL season with both a win and a loss in alternating weeks. Most recently the Raiders were well beaten by the Cowboys in Townsville, while the Titans were close to beating the Eels before taking down the Warriors in a tough clash. When assessing these two head-to-head, Canberra have won 14 times out of 27, but lost most recently by 38 points in Canberra. The Canberra Raiders welcomes back a host of stars for the game, but is it enough to take down this talented Titans side?
The Raiders were highly disappointing in their clash with the Cowboys, making more errors, conceding more penalties and sin binning’s than the Cowboys. Only two Canberra forwards broke the 100m mark from running metres, their representative leaders Josh Papalii and Joseph Tapine, running for 242m combined.
The return of rookie halfback Brad Schneider will hopefully free up halves partner Jack Wighton, and the injection of wingers Nick Cotric and Jordan Rapana on the edges should give Canberra the ability to score more points. Another change to the starting 13 should see more points come from this Raiders side, as Tom Starling starts at hooker and will use his speed around the ruck to open the centre third of the field.
The Titans beat the Warriors last weekend in testing heat last Sunday, and Matt Lodge was not alone as David Fifita reportedly did not enjoy the heat either. Only taking eight runs for 69m, Fifita struggled, unlike his colleagues in the forward pack. All starting forwards for the Titans ran for 120m+, while wingers Phillip Sami and Greg Marzhew broke the 200m mark. The Titans will need to replicate this effort to give themselves their best chance of beating Canberra in Canberra.

Player to watch: AJ Brimson
AJ Brimson’s first touch for the year brought a Beau Fermor try, and he went on to record another try assist and three tackle breaks. Brimson’s attacking potential should continue to unlock the left edge of the Titans, and potentially the right as well, if Canberra overcompensate heavily. Marzhew will look to exploit this more than any as he broke 11 tackles with two-line breaks against the Raiders. Either way the Raiders look on Saturday, the Titans have weapons to be unlocked.
Raiders vs Titans NRL same-game multi
We’re tipping the Gold Coast Titans to get their second win for the season at GIO Stadium on Saturday. With attacking weapons on both edges, and in the middle, the Canberra Raiders will be stretched across the park to make the correct defensive decisions to shut down this strong, young Titans side. We are also backing David Fifita to score a try, as he did in the clash that saw the Titans win by a huge margin last year.
Gold Coast Titans / Fifita anytime try
