Raiders v Panthers match preview

Round 25 of the 2024 NRL Premiership season continues this Saturday afternoon as the Raiders and Panthers face off in Canberra.

It was another disappointing performance from the Raiders last Saturday, as they fell to the Cowboys by 38 points in Townsville. There were major problems on both sides of the field for Canberra, who conceded seven tries and scored just one.

The result has practically ended the Raiders’ finals hopes for 2024, as they have now lost three in a row. As they come up against the second-placed Panthers, they are underdogs this week at $3.32 with BoomBet.

With Jordan Rapana returning from concussion to start at fullback for Canberra, Kaeo Weekes moves to five-eighth to cover for the injured Ethan Strange (calf). Albert Hopoate’s selection on the wing pushes Sebastian Kris to centre, while Adam Cook is 18th man.

The Panthers also lost in round 24, falling two points short in a top-of-the-ladder clash with the Storm at home. In a back-and-forth clash, both sides scored four tries, but a late penalty goal to the Storm proved the difference.

The loss has all but ended Penrith’s minor premiership chances; however, sitting second on the ladder, they remain favourites to win the competition at $3.25 with top NRL bookmakers. Ivan Cleary’s men are also clear favourites this week at $1.36 at PlayUp.

Adding to the disappointment of last Thursday, the Panthers also lost star halfback Nathan Cleary to a shoulder injury and hooker Mitch Kenny to suspension. Jarome Luai moves to halfback, Brad Schneider to five-eighth and Luke Sommerton to hooker, while Liam Martin’s return in the back row pushes Matt Eisenhuth to 18th man.

Raiders v Panthers predictions

Winning five of their last six matches, the Panthers should be far too strong for the Raiders. They have also won the past five meetings between the sides, including the last two in Canberra by an average of over 30 points, so back Penrith to win by 13 or more at $2.25 with leading Australian bookies.

Don’t expect much scoring from the Raiders against one of the top defences in the NRL. They average less than 10 points per game in the past five meetings between the sides, while Penrith may not be as fluid in attack with the loss of Cleary and Kenny in their spine.
