The South Sydney Rabbitohs will host the North Queensland Cowboys in what will be a genuine blockbuster at Accor Stadium on Saturday night.

The Rabbitohs ended up on the wrong end of the score line at the death against the Panthers in their last start, while the Cowboys thrashed the Warriors at home in what was an expected result.

The Rabbitohs have gone 6-2 in their last eight games on the back of Latrell Mitchell’s return from a hamstring injury. The two losses have come when the Sharks and Panthers both scored on what ended up being the final plays of the game.

Both of those sides are well entrenched in the top four and their opposition this week has been there all season as the second banana to Penrith.

There is still a chance the Rabbitohs can miss the top eight (futures punters beware), but the $1.50 favouritism reflects a feeling among punters and bookmakers that they are very much control their own destiny.

Their loss at Accor Stadium last Thursday was significant, as it was the first time Latrell Mitchell lost a game as a Rabbitoh at that ground. His record at the ground is now 14-1, and that loss could spur him on to put in a huge performance. Book him in for a try at $1.96 with BetOnline in any same game multis, while Campbell Graham, Cody Walker and Alex Johnson should be the other considerations.

Graham at $2.35 looks to be good value, with Scott Drinkwater moving into the front line of defence for the Cowboys on that side having defended at fullback all season.

Usually Souths are a 13+ special when they win football games, but the 1-12 margin at $2.95 with Palmerbet feels like the better option for this contest.

For the Cowboys, this game is all about proving they can get the job done in Sydney against a fellow finals team.

Against the Roosters they had off-field tragedy rock their club with the passing of Paul Green, so the jury had to remain out after that loss.

This contest against the Bunnies is the ultimate litmus test for a club that many don’t believe in.

A win would give them enormous confidence about their stock going into an unexpected NRL finals series, while a loss would almost confirm the feelings of many that they aren’t a threat if they can only win at home.

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow will move into the fullback role this week with the omission of Tom Dearden due to a testicular injury, which means Drinkwater will be targeted by the likes of Keaon Koloamatagi on that left-edge for the Cowboys.

It’s a key spot in the defensive line and it could prove to be the key log in the dam wall, which makes the +6.5 line hard to predict.

Jeremiah Nanai managed to get his 17th try of the season, putting him in elite company as a try scoring forward alongside the likes of Steve Menzies, Ben Kennedy and David Fifita as the only forwards in the NRL era to achieve that milestone. He is still good value at $2.80 to cross the stripe, while Valentine Holmes at $3.25 is always a red-hot shout.

Key matchup: Latrell Mitchell vs Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow

It has to be Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Latrell Mitchell. ‘The Hammer’ has had to bide his time as the back-up to Scott Drinkwater, who has enjoyed a marvellous season. Let’s hope he shows off his immense talent in every aspect of the game, because we know Mitchell will and it will excite fans if both fullbacks go off.
