Quilista shines in first-up Caulfield win
Leading trainer Darren Weir has continued his association with quality Perth horses after Quilista scored a fighting first-up win at Caulfield.
Formerly prepared in Perth by Justin Warwick, who remains in the ownership, Quilista was having her first start for Weir in Saturday’s Beveridge Williams Plate.
Weir believes the daughter of Scandal Keeper can step up to better grade.
Weir has had black-type success with former Perth gallopers including Real Love, Star Exhibit and Black Heart Bart and is confident Quilista can add to that tally.
Ridden by Damian Lane, Quilista was sent out the $5.50 favourite before winning by a length from Theanswermyfriend ($7) with Chapel Road ($26) 1-1/4 lengths away third.
“Justin sent her over to run her through her classes and see where we end up,” Weir said.
“I would say at some stage we’ll throw her in the deep end and see where she fits in.
“I think she’ll measure up.”
Despite tackling soft conditions for the first time, Weir was confident the four-year-old would handle the ground.
He said the mare had trialled well on wet tracks in the lead-up to Saturday’s return.
“I know racedays are different to trial days, but she seemed to get through it alright,” Weir said.
“That question has been answered.”
