Queensland launches $1.3m footy fund for rugby league clubs
THE Queensland State Government has unveiled a new grants scheme that will give rugby league clubs and local organisations access to $1,275,000 in public funds.
Bidding for the Footy Facilities Fund opened on Friday, offering assistance of up to $300,000 for essential maintenance, club upgrades and other grassroots projects exclusive to the sport of rugby league.
“The Queensland government is proud to partner with the National Rugby League (NRL) and Queensland Rugby League (QRL) to form the Footy Facilities Fund which will help to foster, develop and grow the game of rugby league across the state,” sports minister Mick de Brenni said in a statement.
“This is especially big news for local communities, who will be able to develop their rugby league facilities in line with competition standards, allowing more players to participate and improve their game in top quality facilities.”
The Footy Facilities Fund has a staunch supporter in Todd Greenberg, who believes the scheme will only improve the state of the sport throughout Queensland and Australia.
“Queensland has produced many quality rugby league players, both men and women, who have grown up playing the game they love throughout this state,” said the NRL chief executive.
“This funding will help boost the continued growth of our game at the grassroots level and benefit many local rugby league clubs as they nurture and support the next generation of players.”
The announcement coincides with the unveiling of Suncorp Stadium’s new jumbo screens, which will make their much-anticipated debut in Saturday’s double act.
League leaders Melbourne Storm will open the night with a 5:30pm kick-off against the Gold Coast Titans, warming the stage for the main event between the Brisbane Broncos and Manly Sea Eagles.
“Queensland is a powerhouse for football, which we’re looking forward to showcase again with this weekend’s double header at Suncorp Stadium,” Mr de Brenni said.
“And best of all, I’m pleased to announce that the new stadium screens are installed and ready to go.
“So not only will Queenslanders be able to see our teams in top form this Saturday, we’ll be able to see all the action up close and in high definition.”
