Port Adelaide v GWS Giants semi final preview
This Saturday night we are treated with a blockbuster clash between the Port Adelaide Power and the GWS Giants at Adelaide Oval in the second semi final as the AFL post-season rolls on.
With the tough task of travelling up to Brisbane to face the Lions last weekend, the Power struggled, losing by 48 points after a poor second-half performance. The Power impressed early, even taking the lead late in the second quarter; however, their performance faltered drastically from there, as the Lions kicked 14 goals to six to win comfortably in the end.
Conceding 123 points, it is clear that the Power have major problems in defence. With injuries to defenders Trent McKenzie and Dylan Williams creating more headaches at selection, Port will be scrambling for solutions in order to avoid the same result this weekend.
At the MCG last Saturday afternoon, the GWS Giants took care of the St Kilda Saints by 24 points in an impressive performance. After a strong start, GWS were able to hold the margin for the rest of the match, never allowing the Saints a chance at a comeback. Midfielder Tom Green was a standout for the Giants with 35 disposals, while Josh Kelly had 27 touches and two goals.
Conceding more inside 50s in the win, the Giants’ defensive unit was very impressive as they rarely allowed the Saints forwards to take marks in their forward third. On the offensive end, it was largely an even contribution, as the Giants proved they could still kick a big score without a major impact from captain Toby Greene, who only kicked one goal.
Both sides are set to be boosted by the return of a star player this weekend. The Power are expecting key forward Charlie Dixon to return from a foot injury, while GWS midfielder Stephen Coniglio will be back after being a late withdrawal from the Saints game due to an injury.

Port Adelaide v GWS betting strategy
After comprehensively beating the Giants at Adelaide Oval in round 22, the Power will come into this match confident of producing the same result. With just six goalscorers last weekend, Port need to find other avenues to goal.
The Giants will be looking for much of the same this weekend. Their midfield got on top of the Saints for most of the match, but GWS now face a different challenge against the damaging Port Adelaide trio of Connor Rozee, Zak Butters and Jason Horne-Francis.
Finding form at the right time of the season, the Giants have the quality required across every line of the team sheet to play their fast-flowing style. We think they show great value at +135 with Palmerbet.
Despite being held fairly quiet last weekend, Giants forward Jesse Hogan was still able to impact the scoreboard with two goals while playing on All-Australian fullback Callum Wilkie. Averaging 2.1 goals a game this season, Hogan is always a threat inside 50 due to his excellent contested marking ability. With the Giants expected to get on top through the midfield, look for Hogan to have plenty of chances inside 50 and kick two or more goals at -136.99 with top online bookmakers.
Roaming across half-back last weekend, Port Adelaide defender Dan Houston found plenty of the footy as the Power looked to play their uncontested short-kicking game. A damaging user of the football who also takes kick-ins, Houston always has plenty of chances to find the ball. We like him to have 25 or more disposals in this one at -106.38 odds.
Key matchup: Zak Butters v Josh Kelly

Perhaps the most damaging player in the Port Adelaide midfield, Zak Butters has emerged as a Brownlow Medal contender in 2023. Leading the disposals last week against the Lions, Butters still struggled to have a major impact on the contest as he went at just 55% efficiency and couldn’t hit the scoreboard. With no more second chances, expect a big performance as he looks to keep the Power’s season alive.
An experienced member of the Giants midfield unit, Josh Kelly has had another excellent campaign in 2023. He dominated the early exchanges last weekend, heading to halftime with 19 disposals and two excellent goals. Kelly combines top-shelf running ability with quality ball-use, an appetite for the contest, and an ability to get forward and hit the scoreboard, making him a tough customer to match up.
