Port Adelaide v Western Bulldogs match preview
Round 17 of the 2024 AFL Premiership season continues on Saturday afternoon as finals contenders Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs face off in South Australia.
Despite travelling interstate, the Bulldogs are slight favourites at $1.80 with Unibet. The Power are at $2.02 with Bet365, while the line is set at just 2.5 points.
Last Sunday, Port Adelaide broke a run of three consecutive losses as they beat St Kilda by two points at Marvel Stadium. In a low-scoring affair, the Power defence stood up, as they secured the victory despite scoring just two second half goals.
As a result, the pressure has eased slightly on Port coach Ken Hinkley. Sitting seventh on the ladder, top AFL bookmakers give them odds of $2.15 to make the top eight.
There are a trio of possible inclusions for the Power, as Jase Burgoyne (hamstring), Willie Rioli (illness) and Lachie Jones (knee) are tests to return. Meanwhile, key forward Todd Marshall has been cleared of a hamstring injury despite being subbed out against the Saints.
The Bulldogs were also successful in round 16, beating North Melbourne by 17 points at Marvel Stadium. Although the Roos trimmed the margin in the final term, it was a comfortable win for Luke Beveridge’s side. Skipper Marcus Bontempelli continued his excellent season with 35 disposals, while small forward Cody Weightman added three goals.
It was the third win in four weeks for the Bulldogs, who have worked their way up to ninth on the AFL ladder. In the logjam of clubs fighting for a top-eight spot, leading Australian bookmakers give them odds of $2.05 to make the finals.
After getting through unscathed against the Kangaroos, don’t expect many changes for the Doggies. However, James Harmes and Nick Coffield both returned through the VFL and could be in line for a call-up.

Port Adelaide v Western Bulldogs R17 predictions
With just one win from their last four matches at Adelaide Oval, the Power haven’t been able to turn their home ground into a fortress this season. The Bulldogs have been incredibly inconsistent, yet they enter this match in much better form than their opposition. Back the visitors to win at $1.80 odds.
Leading Port Adelaide for goals this season, key forward Mitch Georgiades is averaging 1.8 per game. Although he was held goalless against the Saints, he had kicked 10 goals in the three weeks prior and has kicked multiples in eight of his 12 matches this season. Facing an undersized Bulldogs defence, back Georgiades to kick three or more goals at $3.30 with leading online bookmakers.
Averaging 30.5 disposals per game over his last four matches, Marcus Bontempelli has been leading the way in the Bulldogs’ recent success. At 194cm, he is a tough matchup anywhere on the ground. As two of the top midfields in the AFL go head-to-head, back the 28-year-old to collect 30 or more touches at $2.50 with BoomBet.
