Port Adelaide v GWS Giants AFL R22 preview
Wrapping up round 22 of the 2023 AFL Premiership season, the Port Adelaide Power host the GWS Giants at Adelaide Oval this Sunday in a game that could have significant finals implications.
Last weekend, the Power travelled down to Geelong to face the Cats, going down by 12 points in a high-scoring contest. In a tight, back-and-forth contest, the Power held the lead early in the fourth quarter, but the Cats kicked four of the last five goals to snatch the win.
Port Adelaide have now lost their past four matches in a row, sliding down to fourth on the AFL ladder due to their poor percentage.
The Giants also lost last weekend, going down by 11 points to an incredibly accurate Sydney Swans side at Giants Stadium. With the game going back and forth throughout the first half, a late run of Swans goals opened up an 18-point halftime margin. As rain came down in the second half, the game tightened up and the Giants were unable to close the gap.
This loss halts the Giants’ seven-match winning streak. Sitting in eighth spot, GWS are right amongst the battle for positions in the lower half of the eight.
After the Power had six changes last weekend, expect a lot more as the likes of Aliir Aliir, Lachie Jones, Jeremy Finlayson, Miles Bergmann and Kane Farrell return to the side. Key defender Trent McKenzie suffered a knee injury and has been ruled out for the next month, while key forward Charlie Dixon has been sidelined for the rest of the home-and-away season as well with a foot fracture.
The GWS Giants will be without small forward pairing Brent Daniels and Toby Bedford after they were both suspended this week. Substitute Ryan Angwin should make his way into the team, while young midfielders Josh Fahey and Jacob Wehr will also be in the frame.

Power v Giants AFL R22 betting strategy
Port Adelaide’s performances over the last month have been nothing like what we saw during their 13-game win streak earlier in the season. On the other hand, the Giants had won the previous seven before their derby defeat last weekend, showing that they are still in good touch.
The Power have one of the best forward lines in the AFL, while the Giants’ Sam Taylor and Jack Buckley have been one of the top defensive pairings this season. It’s a tantalising matchup, and the Giants look like great value as $2.60 underdogs with Palmerbet.
After a four-goal effort last weekend, Willie Rioli is playing consecutive games for the first time since round 13. Averaging 1.5 goals a game in an injury-interrupted campaign, Rioli has shown his class in patches throughout the season. With the quality of the GWS key defenders, expect the ball to come to ground often, giving Rioli the opportunity to kick two or more goals at $1.57 with top AFL bookmakers.
After being held to just 19 disposals last weekend, GWS half-back Lachie Whitfield will be looking to bounce back with a big one. He was averaging 30 disposals a game in the month before the loss to Sydney, and he also takes kick-ins – a big bonus against Port, who lead the AFL in behinds scored this season. We like Whitfield to collect 25 or more disposals at $1.73.
Key matchup: Rozee v Coniglio
Connor Rozeevs Stephen Coniglio |
23 | Age | 29 |
185cm | Height | 182cm |
79kg | Weight | 83kg |
101 | Games | 197 |
96 | Goals | 110 |
25.7 | 2023 disposal average | 28.7 |
Having an underrated season, Connor Rozee has arguably been the most damaging midfielder for the Power. Averaging a goal a game and leading the club for metres gained, the 23-year-old is always progressing the game and looking to affect the scoreboard.
Stephen Coniglio is another player having an underrated season. Leading the Giants for clearances and tackles, Coniglio is an excellent two-way midfielder who has also played every game this season. He averages 0.6 goals a game, showing that he can also push forward and hit the scoreboard.
